Lower latency is easier said than done:

1. Better equipment
2. Better connections

At the end of the day there is only so much you can do; as we are living quite far away. My suggestion to Kuwaiti ISPs is to raise the bandwidth cap for transfers within Kuwait … people downloading torrents would look for local sources for speed and other would have faster connection for surfing/gaming.

thanks for the feedback K. so given that you have the problem, what would a possible solution be for ISPs to improve this area of the service because i find it often to be a pain and suspect many others do.

on a related note, wataniya’s internet services - namely wnet - have come to a crawl in the past couple of weeks. has anyone else noticed this?

The latency issue is due to the teleglobe connection and the dsl links.
On a fiber connection I have a 50ms ping to Riyadh .. which then jumps to 150ms when it hits London (due to the distance).

has anyone noticed that the main issue in kuwait as relates to internet speeds seems to be the data request and latency rather than the actual throughput?

to clarify to anyone that does not understand: there’s a very noticeable lag between when you send the request (enter a URL) and start receiving the data.

im suspecting - and please feel free to chime in - that it may be kuwait’s proxy based filtering that is causing this problem.

i could spend some time fiddling to see what exactly it was by inspecting the packets and lags but again what use would it be if i can’t change it.

just thought it may be useful to those that were wondering and thinking they might be going crazy.

Man.. I have 10 Mb connection and I am not paying penny. The thing is that higher speed are only useful for downloading and internet sharing. I think anything above 512K is not very useful in video calls, web surfing, and regular day to day use. However, it is sweet to download a 100Mb file in less than a minute ;)
