You know how they do this? I know how they do this, because I saw it at the Abu Dhabi Motor Show last month.

There’s this company–I forget its name, but I remember that it’s German–that specializes in car “foiling”: basically, it shrink-wraps a film on the car. At the show they had a couple of cars, mostly Mercedes, shrink-wrapped in shiny gold, shiny aluminum (looked horrible), and matte black (which is trendy here in the UAE now, and actually looks really cool).

My take: imagine the amount of fingerprints you’ll have to wipe off of your car everyday! Also, TACKY.

  22. Mark says:

Its not chrome, its GOLD, can’t you guys see from the pictures? Gold is a yellowish color, Chrome is a whitish color. If you want to see how a chrome colored benz looks like check this

  23. M. says:

It’s definitely chrome. The lighting of the picture itself has a yellow tint where someone could easily could have mistaken the car to be gold; however, it is chrome. There is just one golden mercedes-an SLR- created out there, if one could see in the Top Gear issue a few months back (not sure when as my memory fails me) rumored to have belonged to Waleed Bin Talal.

  24. Mark says:

Ok, one more time its NOT chrome It’s gold. Whats wrong with you people? its not a color balance issue, check this picture
    http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/01_merc_gold_c63moe.jpg
notice the WHITE dishdashe and the GOLD benz.

  25. M. says:

I don’t know. I think it’s because we good people cannot accept, in our heart of hearts, that something so horrendously kitsch could ever, EVER be created. But I now sadly see that I stand mistaken *aghast*. What’s next, I ask myself. For the time being, I’ll be preparing my warm bath, razor blades and Nirvana’s Greatest Hits album for when I see gold plated kandoras/dishdashas hit Mall of the Emirates next.

  26. SWOS says:

    can any1 pronounce hailag?

  27. Ghostface says:

It’s a new trend but I don’t think it will catch on. How much does having this done cost?
