the hummingbird bakery

One of the places I was looking forward to visiting while I was in London is the hummingbird bakery. Some say that most of the cupcake stores in Kuwait were based on the hummingbird bakery, that might be true but I haven’t tried their cupcakes. My main reason for visiting the hummingbird bakery is for their Chocolate Devil’s Food Cake which is just incredible. Sadly there are only two hummingbird bakeries in London so there is very little chance that a branch will open up in Kuwait. If you ever visit London make sure you pass by the hummingbird bakery and then make sure you visit Ben’s Cookies for the best cookies in London.

I have tried the red velvet cake and my friend tried the aforementioned cake and we both hated them because they were cloyingly sweet.
I seriously don’t understand why people actually like this bakery. The cakes are as sweet as sugar cubes (which is not a good thing).

What does “based on the hummingbird bakery” even mean?
Bakeries and cake shops have been around forever all over the world, but the cupcake craze/fad started with Magnolia Bakery in New York City. Every weekend the line of people waiting for the fresh cupcakes would snake around the block.. it’s become a tourist trap now since it was made famous in many TV appearances, most notably on Sex and the City.
Of course now in Kuwait you can’t swing a dead cat without hitting a new “cupcake” shop. Cupcakes are the new Burgers!!!
Btw… for a quick fix at home, get fresh plain cupcakes from Kuwait Flour Mills at any Co-op and then spread the tops with Nutella.

Zaydoun, its just what i heard, that hummingbird was the source of inspiration for some of the local cupcake startups.

It’s a charming little place . last time I was there I chose a delicious looking chocolate cake but then was unpleasantly surprised by the hidden raisins, completely ruined it for me :/

i cannot beleive zaydoun would suggest that Kuwait Flour Mills cupcakes camn come anywhere close to some of the best cupcakes here! thats crazy! cupcakes are just mini cakes, and Kuwait Flour Mills cakes cannot compare to ones made with real vanilla pods! and its an unforgivable insult to say that chocolate cupcakes made with 9aidawi chocolate can rival those made with Valrhona!!!

Miss Ghesquiere… I never suggested them as a substitute, only as a quick fix in the absence of fresh cupcakes. I was a regular at Magnolia so I know what good cupcakes taste like…
But really… don’t knock it till you try it. I tried Kuwait Flour Mills cupcakes by chance at a friend’s house while I was rummaging for something to eat. I was surprised that they were pretty good, the Nutella made them even better.
KFM gets a bad rap, but seriously their Multi-Grain brown bread is great

Amen to that Zaydoun.
I am a rabid Magnolia girl when it comes to cake and always will be. It was the highlight of our NYC weekend trips when I was a student and that was before it showed up on SATC even…
But if not Magnolia, then anything at Payard is a perfect substitute cake fix for me…
And you are right about the 50,000 cupcake businesses that have just sprung up, everyone has one now… even my little sister for crying out loud LOL. but this is Kuwait and everyone copies everyone :)
Miss Ghes - honestly, if you are using Valhrona or Scharffen Berger to make cupcakes then what a waste of such fine and expensive chocolate… save your good stuff for flourless chocolate cake or homemade truffles where the beauty of it will really stand out. Cupcakes are comfort food that appeal to the little child within us - they are meant to be good but not THAT good…adultifying them detracts from their pleasure and fun, in my opinion :)
Death to 9aidawi, I’m with you on that ;P
