Hey guys, this has to do with the way your eyes perceive colors. When you stare at a color for a while, your "rods" the nerves responsbile for storing the colors as chemical signals, get..well basically, fed up... ANd they start submitting the inverse, or negative, of these colors. The "distorted" image is the same picture, but with the negative colors. Try it in photoshop. You can do it with any image you can obtain a negative off.

I love these optical illusions. The only problem is that nowadays when someone asks me to 'stare' at something for 30 seconds, I'm scared there's going to be a frightening scream and that girl from the exorcist at the end of it =)

Hey Mark, You don't have to stare at it for 30 seconds. After a couple of seconds, when you really concentrate, you will see the illusion.

dude you dont seem to have gotten the illusion. if you stare at that weird colored picture for 30 seconds and then hover over the picture the black and white picture will come up but you will end up seeing the black and white picture in full color. try it yourself and see.

i cant believe u thought the illusion was the mouseover lol

Mark, it wouldn't really accomplish much other than ruin the "illusion". It's not really an illusion, it's just a mouseover. Look at the source code for the javascript.

It's actually two images.

Here's the first one: http://www.johnsadowski.com/2006_stuffs/manzana1.jpg

Here's the second one:

See? No magic.

I studied this in colour theory. It's all about complimentary colours. If you get a colour wheel and pick a colour, the one on the opposite end is the complimentary colour of the one you picked, eg: blue is facing orange, and red facing green, etc. If you look at one colour for a period of time, then stare at a blank space, or white wall, you will see its complimentary colour flashing after everytime you blink.

Nice post:-)
