Menu from restaurant in Damascus Airport

Someone sent me an email with scans from the menu of a restaurant at the Damascus Airport. As expected there are a lot of spelling mistakes.

  5. 5. Patrick | August 10th, 2006 at 8:28 pm

every country has it’s own stereotypiing and generalization. Syrians make fun of Lebanese and Lebanese make fun of Syrians. It’s the samething in the US with the Mexicans and African Americans.

This happens everywhere, I mean, why don’t you email Jay Leno and ask him to stop his jokes that are aimed against Mexicans?

  13. 13. fadibou | August 11th, 2006 at 12:21 am

C’mon guys, they can’t write proper english, otherwise, they won’t understand it.
Give them a chance, from a cultural brispektive they are stuck in the 1940s.

  16. 16. pearl | August 11th, 2006 at 1:14 am

Ok Hindi that was waaaay outta hand, who the hell do u think u r to criticise kuwaitis and lebanese? Im kuwaiti and im proud to say that I am very educated so dont generalise and act like u and ur people are perfect, im not going to go down the road of insults, i wont scoop to that level. The whole topic posted here was never meant to be taken seriously, bringing other nationalities into this is just rediculous n i honestly think if any1 insults Kuwait (or any other country for that matter) then their opinion should NOT be posted!

  17. 17. Patrick | August 11th, 2006 at 1:16 am

Yasmine Abu Khazneh: wow. Some people (You) need to get a sense of humor, Fadibou wrote perspective like that on purpose, because it’s supposed to be FUNNY. I mean, I’ve been to Jordan and I can see why you might not have a sense of humor, you don’t need to take out all your frustration and anger out on us, if you don’t like what you’re seeing you don’t have to comment. I mean, Wooo, you’re from Jordan, wow. Okay? Should I clap for you or something? Let’s clap for the Jordanian who knows how to spell! *Throws confetti*

I’m from Lebanon, so what? Who cares. I make fun of the Lebanese who speak funny English, the Kuwaiti’s also make fun of their own and I know Syrians who make fun of Syria. Point is… Get a fucking sense of humor girl. No one’s prefect.

I mean Perfect, don’t get angry now. My bad.

  18. 18. holla | August 11th, 2006 at 1:22 am

LOL someone pretending to be a hindi that loves syria. now i’ve seen everything LOL.

what next? a paki that loves egggypt?

  19. 19. pearl | August 11th, 2006 at 1:24 am

I agree with patrick, the whole problem started because ppl were taking the topic waaaay to seriously, laugh about it who cares. I have to say that i enjoy the posts mark and nat write, unfortunatly the comments some ppl make always go back to politics, some people need to relax! Life’s too short to get uptight about the slightest things, some may say i was in my last comment but i wasnt i mean yeah some q80s speak shit english n i speak shit arabic but hey..doesnt bother me!

  20. 20. KtheKuwaiti | August 11th, 2006 at 1:26 am

  21. 21. holla | August 11th, 2006 at 1:27 am

Yasmine Abu zegga: I am kuwaiti and i can speak better English than you. Sorry but that’s just the way it is.

Fuck Jordan too BTW, it’s like a Syria without balls.

  22. 22. hanman | August 11th, 2006 at 2:03 am

fuck u all, this is y arabs r weak, they will never unite and will always argue with each other about stupid shit, and let americans and zionist rule us.

  23. 23. Yasmine Abu Khazneh | August 11th, 2006 at 2:33 am

    Dear Patrick,

I fail to see whats fun in this. How is this funny:

“nancy open your anal for all us guys for some…..lessons”

The comments in here are not ‘funny’.

  24. 24. Mo Hat | August 11th, 2006 at 2:35 am

we are not sandniggers, we are above that. Thank you hanman for that point. And Nancy a.k.a. Yasim Father of Shit (something like that) is the same person and more geared towards a guy…a guy who is a FAG. Yes. Now stfu you sandniggers and shove your sand up your ass. ALL RIIIIIGHT

  25. 25. equalizer | August 11th, 2006 at 2:50 am

WTF ???!!!! Listen people FUCK this Arab lets unite shit ok…We can’t turn the clock 1000 years back! i don’t see other nations thinking of themselves as one. We share a language and a distant history. VERY distant. You want the facts? so lets lay it out? All of the arabs nations are seriously fucked!! Kuwaitis don’t wanna work, they get their 200KD BRIBE and shut the fuck up. Syrians fuck up Lebanon and every foreigner that passes through its soil. Egyptians rip you off and pretend nothing happened. Lebanese keep the country drowning in debts while focusing on fashion. Yeah thats stereotypes for you ignorant fucks that pretend to know it all. Keep fighting, maybe that will land you on the moon someday.

  26. 26. Ron Jeremy's Vaseline | August 11th, 2006 at 6:55 am

There’s too much hostility. People are just not adding the correct dosage of Vaseline to their diets.

  27. 27. Hanan Cohen | August 11th, 2006 at 8:33 am

You Arabs are so funny. You think you are special. You think that your spelling mistakes are special.

You stereotype Syrians because of spelling errors in one menu. You fight and quarrel because of spelling mitakes.

You can find those mistakes everywhere – in Tel Aviv, Al Quds, Budapest and even in New York.

Well, take a hint from the Japanese

    http://engrish.com/

    Stop fighting.

Make peace with yourselves and with us, Israelis.

  28. 28. holla | August 11th, 2006 at 9:34 am

thanks for the inspirational words Ms. cohen, but there will never be peace in the middle east. the ppl here thrive on conflict, it’s what keeps them feeling alive and gives their petty lives purpouse. you more than anyone should know since jews are a struggling people.

there never was peace, and there never will be. learn to live with it or move away if if you value your sanity.

  30. 30. Mark | August 11th, 2006 at 10:11 am

What the hell happened here? I didn’t even say anything anti-Syria in my post like I would usually do. Some people seriously need to get a sense of humor!

  31. 31. KtheKuwaiti | August 11th, 2006 at 10:27 am

  34. 34. Arroussa | August 11th, 2006 at 12:32 pm

It does seem strange that your blog worries more about menu mistakes at Damascus airport instead of the plight of the Lebanese people!

Don’t you think there should be a flag on your front page about helping Lebanon and the Lebanese people?

  35. 35. Mark | August 11th, 2006 at 12:34 pm

if you want lebanese politics you can check my other blog ouwet.com dedicated to lebanese politics.

  36. 36. Arroussa | August 11th, 2006 at 12:43 pm

    And Ohhhh. I forgot.

Don’t ya just luv it when someone points to spelling mistakes and can’t seem to write proper grammar.

    Your title should read:
MENU FROM A RESTAURANT AT DAMASCUS AIRPORT

    and not as you wrote:
MENU FROM RESTAURANT IN DAMASCUS AIRPORT.

  37. 37. Mark | August 11th, 2006 at 12:48 pm

if i pointed to grammer mistakes then your comment would make sense but since i pointed to stupid spelling mistakes then it doesn’t.

  38. 38. Arroussa | August 11th, 2006 at 12:54 pm

    Typical reaction to deflect guilt.

I just luv it. So it is ok to criticize other people spelling while making your own grammar mistakes!!!

    can’t ya see it bro.

  39. 39. Mark | August 11th, 2006 at 12:56 pm

yes it is because i am not a restaurant at an international airport. can’t ya see it bro? wanna have a beer and chill at my place bro?

  42. 42. fadibou | August 11th, 2006 at 1:54 pm

I think everyone took this too serious and starting calling each other names.
Appart from Syrians, everyone else can say whatever they want, so as mark, patrick, and pearl said: chillout and enjoy the blog.
And let the Syrians keep those translations coming.
I need to order a flubbasheeno.

  61. 61. Yasmine Abu Khazneh | August 12th, 2006 at 6:35 pm

    I didn’t delete my comment.

  62. 62. Flippa X | August 12th, 2006 at 6:47 pm

Mark, i suggest you keep on posting spelling mistakes. It’s funny to read them and listen to people who fight over it. You people r stupid.

  63. 63. mocman | August 13th, 2006 at 9:30 am

hmm anyway we can get back nancy’s posts from backup??? i really woiuld like to know what nancy said to invite anal lessons….

  64. 64. Yasmine Abu Khazneh | August 13th, 2006 at 3:14 pm

Hi Mocmac, Nancy didn’t say anything except that the canteen and cafeteria owners that wrote these menus are poor people, with no English education, that are just trying to make a living. The attacks from the people in here then followed. I said that these mistakes occur all around the Middle East and not just Syria, but my post was deleted. I really don’t understand why.

  65. 65. Yasmine Abu Khazneh | August 13th, 2006 at 3:26 pm

Patrick, you think it’s sad to send Jay Leno an email, but on the other hand, you don’t think it’s sad to scan a four paged menu just to get it on your blog and have people make fun of poor hardworking people? I guess ‘sad’ is relative.

In here, I posted my opinion, under my full name, I think people should respect that, and refrain from swearing. Especially since what I said, does not insult anybody. I will not be posting here again, but I do ask for some respect as I thought this was a cultured, open minded blog.

  66. 66. Mark | August 13th, 2006 at 3:38 pm

This is what Nancy originally said:

    Dear Mark,
These mistakes occur in Arab countries all over the Middle East, Mostly because the owners of these cafeterias and canteens could not afford an English education, but at the same time, they want foreigners to be able to read a menu that isn’t only written in Arabic, most of these people are self taught. Dating back to when Nat left Lebanon through Syria, it’s evident that you hate Syrians, and have insulted Syria several times. I could point out specifically what you and Nat said if you are interested.

  67. 67. Mark | August 13th, 2006 at 3:41 pm

Yasmine its not sad to post a menu from a restaurant full of spelling mistakes. But it is sad that you find a menu full of spelling mistakes offensive.

  68. 68. Yasmine Abu Khazneh | August 13th, 2006 at 3:45 pm

Mark, listen, I’m not even Syrian, but the comments following were too full of hate, I felt like I had to say something. I do not think scanning menus is sad, I think the intolerant comments were sad. I get fwds like this menu in my inbox all the time; it was never a big deal. That’s all I have to say about that.
