Foot Locker in Kuwait

I was at Marina Mall today and noticed that Foot Locker will be opening up where the Bear Factory used to be (Across from Tommy). It seems Alshaya got the franchise to Kuwait.

Yep … Guess who arabized the logo? ;)
Was really tough and I’m not 100% happy about the end result but you do what you can.

“It seems Alshaya got the franchise to Kuwait.”
Kuwait only? LOL
3. Tata Botata | May 18th, 2006 at 12:27 am
I second that LOL :)

tough? you couldn’t get arabic letters easier then those not including the fact that each word is just 3 and 4 letters long.
My university proffesor is giving a typography course this weekend at Hilton maybe you could check it

oooh football goodies :D at last alshay3 opens something useful. If he could also include nation/club jerseys… he’ll be laughing all the way to the bank
6. Tata Botata | May 18th, 2006 at 8:39 am
Mark, I would like to see you try. :)
There’s a lot to it than what meets the eyes.
I was in kitabat last month, I think I’m gonna pass your proffessor’s workshop.

Also I would like to quote somebody here …
Arabic Typography Is Hard
Yourself
8. Mark | May 18th, 2006 at 9:08 am
lol thank you for getting that quote. if only you knew what i was working on it would make foot locker look like intro to design 101.
Arabic Typography is hard, but what you did for foot locker isnt counted as typography, its a 3 letter word using pre exisiting shapes. its very basic stuff done on a daily basis by any designer. you are dealing with a very easy to work with english typeface and and the arabic word is extremely short. there is no challenge in it.
Dude even if you went to kitabat last month, you can’t compare any of the speakers to people like halim or nadim matta or Mohamad Hamady. These are the guys you should be listening to not Yasmine Taan. I can’t believe they put her as a speaker!
9. Tata Botata | May 18th, 2006 at 9:20 am
It’s a four days conference dude, they had other amazing speakres and although I didn’t go to the track where yasmine is lecturing, I’m quite sure she had something worthy to talk about.
Huda Abi Fares doesn’t just pick anybody
10. Mark | May 18th, 2006 at 9:30 am
Huba Abi Fares is what you are hitting me back with? Man do you know much about her. Get her book called Arabic typography and check out the amount of typographical mistakes in it… its like the laugh of the industry.
11. Tata Botata | May 18th, 2006 at 9:44 am
hitting you back with?
You see? That’s why I don’t like to comment here … I can’t have a proper intelligent conversation with you. You tend to turn them into wrestling matches.
12. a non fan | May 18th, 2006 at 11:03 am
tata, you are so right! mark is a big headed arrogant person who doesnt accept criticism of any kind. what a loser
13. Mark | May 18th, 2006 at 11:18 am
i dont mind criticism, i actually spend a lot of time criticizing myself, but when it comes to other people criticizing me i only accept criticism from people who are qualified to criticize me.
No offense Tata but I can’t discuss anything design related with you because I have seen your portfolio and to be very honest with you I don’t think you are a very good designer at all. You definitely have the passion thats for sure but your work isn’t any good. (I am just being blunt here)
This is why you can’t have a proper intelligent conversation with me, its because whatever you say related to design I just think of your work and you lose all credibility.
14. Tata Botata | May 18th, 2006 at 11:59 am
I know somebody who doesn’t give a fuck about your opinion.
You said once on Halim Choueiry “I don’t think there is any designer in the Middle East who is a better designer then he is.” That’s exactly the same as a kid telling his father “Daddy, you’re the best daddy ever” Same Logic (or the lack of it for that matter).
Best designer in the middle east, What do you know about the middle east mr. “I don’t want arabic character on my new phone”.
I will save myself a headache and some precious time and stop this conversation right here.
15. Mark | May 18th, 2006 at 1:44 pm
so because i dont like arabc characters on my phone I don’t know anything about design in the Middle East?
16. holla | May 18th, 2006 at 4:38 pm
Anyone with half a fucking brain can see that the arabic title of foot locker looks like shit and is really simple much like its counterpart in english.
it’s ok, i think the whole logo is crap so arabic isn’t going to magically make it better, infact it makes it about 1000x worse bc for fuck’s sake, just say FOOOT LOOOOKRRR in arabic and listen to how stupid you sound.
17. Carlsb3rg | May 18th, 2006 at 4:49 pm
at least they didnt call it خزانة القدم
18. Mark | May 18th, 2006 at 4:50 pm
lol that would be so dumb lol
19. holla | May 18th, 2006 at 4:54 pm
hahahahaa yeah well they should just leave the english name and the ppl who can’t read it shouldn’t shop there anyway. the same with arabi shops.

Just thought I’d say - I’m on my way from the UK in a couple of weeks to open some of these stores. There will be quite a few appearing soon… and I agree, the logo does look odd!
22. Mark | May 23rd, 2006 at 7:49 am
sounds like a cool job

I came across this site by fluke… and reading these comments, i have to say one thing. Mark… whoever u are, you either need to grow up or put a bullet through your head. People like u will end up in a mental institute… Tata, as an arabic type designer i will admit that the arabic isnt ‘WAW’ but that just comes down to taste in the end. Thank you for attending Kitabat. Huda and I worked hard for that conference and it was a good start for the Middle East. Mark, you weren’t even there… Yasmine Taan is a prof. and so were many other speakers, and that was one of our points, we had a track just for prof. and teachers. Huda is a great person, and has changed a lot of things in the UAE in terms of awareness and education. Thanks Mark. But grow up.
