Kuwait Vs France - 1982 World Cup

I just found a video on YouTube to probably one of the coolest moments in the World Cup ever. Back in 1982 when Kuwait was at the World Cup a very controversial incident took place. Kuwait was losing 3 goals to 1 when the French team scored the 4th goal. The Kuwaiti players thought they had heard the Russian referee blow the whistle before the goal so they stopped playing. After the goal was scored Sheikh Fahid Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah who was president of the Kuwait Football Association came down to the field and demanded the referee cancel the goal. He was furious and was yelling at his players to get off the pitch and go home when finally the referee gave in and canceled the goal. That was the only time in the World Cup history where someone other than the referee made the decision to cancel a goal. The referee later had his international refereeing credentials taken from him.

In the video the incident takes place like after 1:10 minutes.

more like one of the shameful moments of kuwaiti football.

  4. 4. Marzouq | December 4th, 2006 at 1:09 pm

I really dont think it was a shameful moment, if the ref made a mistake then why should the players pay for it.

In the NFL the coaches have 3 chances to challenge the ref’s call, and it is reviewed by multiple refs and there is clear video footage which makes a lot of things pretty clear! That time Sheikh Fahad stepped in!

Thats why the NFL sucks, does it matter if ur losing 4-1 or 5-1?? did he have to make a scene?

I don’t think it was shameful either. I think it was actually cool how Sheikh Fahed got really upset and went down to fight with the ref. You can see in the clip how they were trying to push him back and calm down.

also who knew Kuwait existed back then? Like no one so its cool how they were able to stick out in a crowd at an event like the world cup!

    any publicity is good publicity.

yea exactly, there’s no such thing as bad publicity. But still it kind of looked unprofessional to me.

    i’ll post it later

Man sometimes you have to like the K8ti attitude.. he is like.. come on boys we r going back home.. fuckin yes.. they give a fuck about nothing.. everything for them is worthless.. sometimes it is damn nice, like in the above clip.. yalla yalla

  11. 11. Carlsb3rg | December 4th, 2006 at 6:26 pm

    Marzouq:
If the ref made a mistake, there’s a board of officials who can take neccessary action. Oh ya and the players pay for it.. thats football.

    Mark:
You mean publicity like kuwait is a bunch of nomads ruled by a sheikh who does what he wants?

regardless of what you guys think of the incedent, you have to admit that the fact Sheikh Fahad stepped in shows how much balls, boldness, breath, character, complexion, courage, dauntlessness, disposition, earnestness, energy, enterprise, enthusiasm, essence, fire, force, gameness, grit, guts, heart, spunk, vigor, vitality, life and even a sense of humor to stand-up with the Kuwaiti team and to make them shine! How does our team look today? yeah….we have went a looooong way after his demise :(

Thats so fucking cool. Sheikh Fahad makes us proud. I heard what happened, but never saw it in video. If there was to be one person in the world to cancel a world cup goal other than a referee, it has to be the kuwaiti head of football, no one else.
fuckin amazing… gonna down load it for my ipod.

i am with carlsberg on this one

i have never seen any player or team official get upset like that, mind you that kuwait were loosing anyways, imagine what would have happened if kuwait were 2-1 up and france gets that goal.

i dont think a person not familiar with our part of the world, will look at this and think it is something good, it will only add to the rich arab sheikh stereotype.

Yazeed… What utter jibbersish! complete rubbish!!
Fights and arguements with referees happens all the time.. till today, with the best of the bests.
The only difference was that this time this person was the only won successful to get his way. Every team would want that. They have all tried to argue with referee or what ever if things wernt fair, yet hes a bad person because he succeded?!?!?!
    what complete nonesense.

1966 - Walter Ulbricht comes down to the pitch to disallow Bobby Charlton’s goal.

    poor ref.

anon i don’t think fights to such a scale no longer happen in todays football.

  19. 19. jane | December 5th, 2006 at 1:46 am

what difference does it make when he canceled it ? like they actually think they were going to win or draw , just a waste of time, if anything the Kuwaiti goal was a mistake , u see the player kicked the ball before the refry whistle

  20. 20. Yazeed | December 5th, 2006 at 8:44 am

    anon,
have u ever seen an official that changes his decision because of some player, team official, or who ever, threated to withdraw the team?????????
    that was my point,
in any sport u’ll have arguments with the referee about a decision, although its only in tennis and American football where u can actually challenge the call and they would review it by video (or by a 3d animation in tennis), thats the only two sports that i know off that have that kind of system in place.
never have i seen a soccer match where the decision, of a foul, penalty, offside, goal or any other thing, gets reversed after the call.

plzz dont try to be a smartass, u knew what i meant with what i wrote.

  21. 21. anon | December 6th, 2006 at 12:28 am

    YAZEED,
What are you getting at? Whats your point?

Plzz get to your point. By the way, i wasn’t being a smartass.. i wouldn’t know how to.

The point remains that Sh Fahad makes us proud, and what he did was the right thing. and he succeded.
I don’t know what your problem is. However, you are entitled to your opinion. :)
