Magnet falling down a copper tube

I didn’t think I would find this video interesting but it is! The clip isn’t slowed down or anything, its in real time but the falling magnet creates an eddy current that exerts a damping force on the magnet. [YouTube]

nice … looks simple to do but does it require anything other than a magnet and copper tube ?

  4. 3azeez says:

so why dont we use magnets as dampers in cars?

@ 3azeez: they are some applications of it in some new cars + breaking systems as well.

@ Mark: ok I am surprised you know Eddy and his current :P

3azeez many cars use a form of magnetic dampers. the Corvette ZR-1 is one example.

    That’s a real-life ‘Bullet Time’ effect :)
