Sharq the Movie

I found this movie trailer on K.thekuwaiti’s blog. Its a movie made in Kuwait and from the looks of the trailer it looks pretty cool. Although the plot is really cliche, “six kids have the adventure of their lifetime” the fact that its about six Kuwaiti kids in Kuwait makes it special.

There is another movie I heard that was good called “Shabab Cool”. I was told it was about street racing in Kuwait and that it got banned from the movies here.

By the way, the movie Sharq is directed by Erik Sandoval. The only Sandoval I know is Hope Sandoval of Mazzy Star. I wonder if he is related to her?

Heck I will just post same here, you do not have moderation:

Just from the trailer, the idea is similar to other international movies with similar themes plus I do not see it giving a realistic view of Kuwaiti Kids. If it was done along the lines of fight club , fast and the furious or maybe beavis and butthead, all would be more realistic than Sharq, even Supersize me would be a better idea (plot, mohammed will start a 30 days brek.,lunch and dinner from Fara7 and ends up being as big as a dolphin)

The trailer looks like those boys have traveled through a time portal to present time Kuwait and it is obvious that it has been done to project a positive story, which does not stretch the imagination.

I tried to find more on Erik Sandoval , but there is a guy in the US with the following profile on myspace:

    General Filming/Skateboarding/Graphic design/Acting/Editing
    Music All kinds

    Status: Swinger
    Orientation: Straight
    Hometown: Los Angeles California
    Body type: 5′ 4″
    Zodiac Sign: Aquarius

Then I looked on youtube and found a few other short movies done by him

    1) The Persistence of Vision

This is more like a short movie, looks good and well done

    2) Rex Radison is The Man About Town

    Also looks excellent.

conculsion, the guy has talent and vision, but I am not sure about the realisim of Sharq.

You keep changing your nickname/email/website when you post comments .. of course its going to catch you.

Realism or not .. its still a good (quality too) movie made in Kuwait with the help of Kuwaities .. call it what you want, I think its a great step in any direction.

The camera work looks excellent and modern unlike typical Arabic movies, the storyline will be gay and naive-ish and the acting will be over-done.

    Still, I will see it.

Oh and Mark, “Shabab Cool” sucked. It projected Kuwait in a horrible way for a movie that’s one of the first Kuwaiti movies. It was about two friends, a gay dude and a blind dude in a horrible storyline.

Shabab cool about a gay dude and a blind dude?
okay… but where does the street racing come into picture ? dont tell me the blind guy does donuts!! : )

Sharq was an idea.. written by a Kuwaiti, diredted by Eric, who is American, with the help of Kuwaitis. He came to Kuwait for 3 months, filmed the movie and went back to the states to edit it. Both the Kuwaiti screenplay writer and the american director were friends at USC, a university with a highly respected film school!

Now I personally know everyone that was involved in the film. Regardless of what opinion you may have about it, the film is great! For young students in this age to actually come up with a screen play and go the further mile to make a movie is a great achievement..

Many of us wont even come close to sumthing like that in our lifetime.. So dont hate please..
