mEL: I read somewhere that higher octane only avoids knocking and gives better acceleration but mileage normally goes down with higher octane fuel.

Iirrespect of the Octane No. in kuwait the problem is really in the residues & impurities in the fuel(including water ),the worst impuriteis are the gums that burn and damage the pistons. and if Kuwait's fuel stayed for too long in the tank ( like parking a car or bike off season ) it disolves the rubber parts & seals around the submerged fuel pum and rusting the tank

The expensive 98 ( green pumps ) is actually IMPORTED !! That is why it is too expensive for Kuwait.
If your vehicle is not a high performing one the I suggest one full-up of the 98 Octane after every three full-up of the lower octane

K.theKuwaiti:

True but in the case of octane it is impossible, look it up.
BTW: I work in the oil sector for 8 years now and bumped heads with CEO's of major company's and heads of marketing.

Lucky people.. I pay £70 (37KD) to fill my r33 skyline (65 litres tank) here in the uk.. at £1.08 a litre and it does 25mpg if I drive her gently, which is hard!
It will only use shell v-power too which is the most expensive. I was told that in Japan they have some really high ocatne juice. I think Kuwait should give all its citizens abroad a free fuel card.. Mark.. please bring that into power when you become mayor :p

Did you know that there is no real way to test octane no matter what number.
Food for thought

I copy pasted what K said into the forum and got the following reply:

Although the octane rating used in the UK is RON it is not the Research Octane Number. The UK RON is the average of the RON and PON quoted above and should be the one quoted on forecourts. Our RON acronym refers to Road Octane Number. Standard UK fuel rating is 91 (Don't remember seeing it on any forecourt for years. Premium (normal fuel) 95, super unleaded is 98-102 RON depending on the supplier. BP is 102 RON.

I was reading in a Jeep forum that the Wrangler’s engine was made to run on 87 octane and anything more could actually be bad for the engine. So I wanted to check how much octane is in the Premium gas.

So does that mean you will not drive it any more? :P
