Avenues Update
I hadn’t been to the Avenues for awhile so this is just an update for people haven’t been there recently also.
Carrefour is now open. I was expecting to find stuff there that wasn’t available at Sultan Center but surprisingly they either had the same stuff or less. The cornflakes section for example is a joke at Carrefour filled mostly with their Carrefour branded cornflakes. Their fish section was larger and their bakery seems better but didn’t get a chance to try it. The coolest thing about Carrefour is their electronics section. They have a ton of stuff and its all good brands like Sony, Samsung etc.. plus they have a ton of accessories and gadgets. Problem is you can find the stuff cheaper elsewhere.
Gap is now open. I was never a fan of Gap so I can’t say much about it. Kuwaiti Cosmopolitan has a detailed post on Gap so you can check that out. [Link]
GoSport is now open. The place is huge, much larger then I was expecting it to be. They have a lot of sports gear all laid out very nicely. I think its my favorite sports store at the moment not that they had strong competition.
Other notable mentions: Lucky Brand Jeans opened up. Ben Sherman is opening soon. Banana Republic still closed. I was supposed to have lunch at the Noodles place upstairs but there was an hour and a half waiting list. Parking wasn’t a problem at 2PM on Friday.

avenues is just a over-glorified version of marina mall, a bit bigger with a bit more class. The only things that I think will worth the trip to avenues is banana republic and the (from what I’ve heard) vast amounts of cinema screens.

Compared to the last time you had been, how many newer Starbucks have opened at the Avenues? I hear Carrefour Kuwait are running a tight ship - do let’s hope this latest MAF venture in Kuwait is not half as lackadaisical as their flagship M & S store in Salmiya.

I just came back from Avenues, I would like to add that whoever designed the Floor Plan for Gaps was probably an idiot in design because that store is soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo tight and ill organized that it was hard navigating around it, hell bumping into people is so much easier now. And yeah Banana Republic opened at night I didn’t go in, it was too crowded.

Could not agree more, been there I don’t see what the fuss is all about, most of the items on the shelves are available in both Sultan and Jam3ia’s at a lower rate, I wonder if Carrefour can survive financially over the coming years or lets say months.

The point is that Carrefour carries mainly French food products, and that includes their own brand. Unlike in North America, most European and British supermarkets carry their own branded products, and Carrefour is one such place. If customers in Kuwait are going to go to Carrefour expecting to find American or American-style products, they are going to be sadly disappointed. But if customers are looking for quality European, mainly French, brands, then that’s what they’re going to find. Many of the items and brands might not be recognized by people in Kuwait, but that does not mean that they carry “less” than places like Sultan Centre. Personally, I am thrilled that Sultan is finally getting some real competition, and it is high time Kuwait got a dose of some quality European food products.

The Avenues is not fully opened and yet so full…
People in Kuwait like to complain. There are a lot of new shops that opened there. Carrefour is a new entrant to the Kuwaiti market. Give it time. I love Sultan, but every time I remember that I had that useless advantage card gets me upset. I have been using it for the longest time ever and then they realized the program doesnt work and re-invented the idea into a newer card! So what about my points!! All that time!!
Well… all I am saying is that the avenues is not that bad at all.. Although I dont see the fuss about how crazy people get with every new store that opens there like the GAP (I heard many items were sold out within hours LOL)

wow…Kuwait now is one of the most important country in the whole world for brands and franchises company. It’s almost the only country that has all brands and franchised stores and restaurants, more than any other country in the world.
God..I love that country
Good luck

Can’t wait for Ben Sherman!
17. Mark | May 26th, 2007 at 11:55 am
I should have methoned that carfour has a really large cheese collection
18. TanGo | May 26th, 2007 at 2:51 pm
zaydoun, you will find cheeses to your heart’s [sorry i mean stomach's] content…

Zaydoun: You are so right! I am not in Kuwait at the moment so I can’t judge for myself. But yes, that will be my ultimate test! It is the one aspect of Carrefour that I have been most looking forward to. That, and their bakery (some good proper bread). Also, I wonder if they will have a deli section…
20. Holla | May 26th, 2007 at 4:13 pm
fuck carrefour. you have to be seriously sad to be excited about a french supermarket.

Just a little note for all you Avenue goers………..take care not to stand still for too long!!!! yep, weird I know but listen to this. While waiting outside Boots, my freind and her 3 year old daughter were asked by the Sri Lankan ‘military’ security guard, not to stand still and to move on……..what???? When we objected and said how ridiculous that was we were then joined by additional security who agreed with us that this was silly, however he then proceeeded to tell my freind’s 3 year old, not to go near the ‘light box’ with her CLOSED water bottle! What do they have wiring problems???? Anyway, we laughed it off but as we walked through the rest of the mall to witness numerous drivers taking up the only few seats, sitting picking their feet, we realised how enraged we felt - we were a family out shopping for the day, just standing still in the Avenues, maybe they should install conveyor belts to keep everyone moving!!!!
22. Holla | May 27th, 2007 at 12:00 pm
yeah actually avenues needs conveyor belts so all the fatarses can quickly glide to the foodcourt and starfux.
23. anon | May 27th, 2007 at 9:38 pm
holla: Yeah, about as sad as someone who has no purpose in life but to be cynical and angry and self-hating. Really sad.
24. jo | May 27th, 2007 at 9:46 pm
i feel actually intimidated by the security they follow you and look at you while you shop.
they should actually have a more frendly approach

I wonder if anyone can help clear up the confusion for me…is there an aerial shot of the Avenues? Also, is there another development, just as big being built right next to it?

Just to let you know guys, i saw Kuwaiti Cospomolitan Review for GAP and there was a picture of a body shirt with GAP logo on it… My wife bought one just like it from GAP UK in the Clearance section back in december!!! can’t they bring us something new? I dont think its like a new line of shirts otherwise we would have found it again in the new collection so its definitly old…
Speaking of old stocks, do they have the RED hoodies? They were sold out in the UK so im wondering maybe they stock them here? There was a nice red hoodie my wife loved but was in size XS or something….
