Bayan Dental & Me
I’ve been visiting Bayan Dental for over 5 years now. I first found out about them from Zaydoun and ever since me and Nat have been getting all our dental work done there at their Salmiya branch. They were actually featured in my Miskan project back in 2005 as Day 303 which is where the picture above is from. Once every few months I pass by my dentist (Dr Samer Khaddour) for scaling because I know that the longer the gap between my visits the more I am going to suffer during my session so I try to keep the gaps small. My dentist and Nat always seem to team up on me since they find my fear amusing but I’m slowly slowly getting over it.
Anyway I recently got approached by Bayan Dental and got offered veneers for free if in return I could post and explain what veneers were on my blog and also about my experience getting them installed. I didn’t have a clue what veneers were but after a quick google followed by a detailed explanation from Bayan I found these two words the best way to explain them… Hollywood smile. Veneers give you the perfect smile and you get them installed in one hour without any pain or anesthesia and they last forever.
I asked them if my dentist could install them for me and since he specializes in restorative and aesthetic dentistry they told me it shouldn’t be a problem. Since then I’ve already had a couple of visits with my dentist getting a mould of my teeth done so I could see how my teeth currently look and how they will look once I am done. They will be sending me a bunch of pictures of difference cases before and after veneers so I could share them here with some proper information about veneers and how they work. For now I thought I would post this to keep everyone in the loop on whats going on. If you have any questions about veneers (and I guess anything dental related) you can post them below since someone from Bayan will be reading the comments and answering any questions you might have.
Since we’re on the subject of dentistry for those of you who have a fear from dentists you could post what concerns you have below and I could try to answer them from my experience like for example how much pain or discomfort a procedure might have or how long certain things take etc.. I haven’t done all the procedures but I think I’ve done most of the general ones. One thing I’ve learned from my experience is that if you have a dental issue now and you don’t take care of it, it will only get worse tomorrow and the fix becomes more complicated.

2. To mask minor intrinsic tooth staining
3. To create shape changes for teeth

Don’t confuse Lumineers with Veneers. They are both thin porcelain shells used to give patients nicer and whiter smiles. But there is a big difference, Veneers require minor tooth preparation whereas Lumineers requires zero tooth preparation. With Veneers the dentist needs to use anesthesia to eliminate any discomfort, while with Lumineers no anesthesia is required

Mark, if Dr. Samir is planning Veneers then you will definitely require anesthesia, or you won’t be able to tolerate the discomfort while he is preparing your teeth.

Just got Brite Smile (whitening) done last night at international clinic. Hurts like @*!@%!!! Teeth really white though. But not sure I am enjoying what its done to my moderately sensitive teeth. Doc says pain should go away soon. Oh and it costs 200KD

Thursday i spent screaming from my tooth and calling every private practice in Q8 non of which could see me… had to live with it and eat soft food till Sunday
Sunday my dentist tells me the tooth i neglected and refused to continue its treatment is now ruined and has to go… suggesting that i should remove it and remove 3 others and get my self braces while nearing my 30′s! My tooth is fine and is not GOING ANY WHERE… sorry Doc
i am seeking a 2nd opinion tommorow… and looks like im seeking a 3rd with bayan too… a 4th and a 5th and a 10th until i can get a dentist who would agree that removing a perfectly fine tooth is a crime…
oh and when i get on the chair… i very much but scream bloody murder… what if the guy slips with the drill and punctures your tongue? they are humans after all not robots… or they slip or something… i hate the shrill sound of the drill… i hate the smell it produces… i even hate that sucking cup…
and that tent thing they put on? It hurts… it suffocates and it tastes bad… and no amount of needles to numb you is going to change that

Your website explains that your dentistry is a Restorative and Cosmetic Dental Clinic. I am looking to have a general bi-annual checkup/cleaning. Do customers come to your clinic for this procedure or should I be looking somewhere else?

I’ve been informed by my dentist that there are various procedures for tooth whitening. What is the procedure done by Bayan Dental Clinic? What are the differences in the different procedures?

There are two types of teeth whitening procedures:
1. In-office bleaching
2. At-home bleaching
Both types rely on Hydrogen Peroxide or Carbamide Peroxide to whiten teeth. In-office bleaching uses high material concentration, up to 35%, while at-home bleaching uses low concentration, 10-15%. Office bleaching is usually performed in about an hour and uses an Ultraviolet light to speed up the bleaching process. Home bleaching is usually completed in 10-14 days and is usually done over night.
To simplify the bleaching process to you, yellow teeth are caused by the deposition stains in things we consume, like tea, coffee, sauces ….etc, the idea behind bleaching is to open the teeth pores so Peroxides will get into your teeth to target those stains to oxidize and dissolve them giving you whiter teeth.
Your teeth might become sensitive during the bleaching process. Sensitivity is temporary and will go away within 48 hours after bleaching. Remember that bleaching temporarily open your teeth pores, that’s why your teeth might become sensitive.
Keep in mind that the bleaching process is not completed by the time you leave the office or by the time you stop the home bleaching. Since your teeth pores will remain open for about 48 hours, the bleaching process will continue for 48 hours after you complete your bleaching sessions. So, it is very important to stay away from colored stuff during this period. We always tell our patients “Do not eat or drink anything that would stain a white shirt for 48 hours”

I need to admit, I don’t like being at the dentist too!!
That’s why you need to take your time finding a dentist you like and trust. It is very important to look for a well qualified dentist in your area. Ask around, there is nothing wrong with getting 2nd opinions, but make sure you get it from a qualified dentist.
From what you are saying the tooth is broken down and badly decayed, so your dentist has decided its better if the tooth is taken out. Get a second opinion from a well trained Prosthodontist and a Periodontist. Both will determine prognosis from their point of specialty. A Prosthodontist will be able to determine whether the tooth condition will allow the placement of a crown. A Periodontist will be able to determine whether the crown can be placed without affecting the biologic structures around the tooth. I am not trying here to burst your bubble or be a party blooper, but my experience with Veneers and Bayan dental was not as pink as I thought It would be. The doctor I saw at Bayan was so good with the words “ if you know what I mean”. Don’t get me wrong his work was not that awful. But when someone tell you that you will be getting the ultimate Hollywood smile, you expect the ultimate Hollywood smile specially after agreeing on a hefty bill of KD 3000!
The claim of having my veneers done in 2 to 3 sessions was a myth. I ended up visiting the upscale clinic in Kuwait city more than 7 times! Yes it was all for my benefit and to get THE dream smile I’ve ever wanted unfortunately it never happened.
When I sat at my doctor’s chair I told him a tearful tragedy story of my previous experience with dentistry and my teeth. I had so many dentists making tragic wonders to my mouth and the results were very sad for almost all my life. One tooth missed forever. One tooth discolored and a very bad looking bridge! I thought if I tell him my history he would be more compassionate to actually tell me if he cant give me my dream smile before we start so I don’t get disappointed. But as the good salesman he was, he gave me the moon in one hand and the son in the other “ As we Kuwaitis say”.
After coming and going and paying KD 500 every month, I ended up with a much better smile but NOT the Hollywood one I’ve ever wanted. The small tooth is still small, and the discolored one is still discolored due to a root canal.
I agreed with my doctor that I don’t want to pay the remaining KD 900 because simply my smile is not Hollywood-isk and am not very satisfies. He was gentleman enough to agree with me.
I like Bayan Clinic, I like the cute clean environment .. but if you want a Hollywood smile, I think you should head to Los Angeles. AS SIMPLE AS THAT

Bleaching and cleaning are two different procedures.
Cleaning removes plaque, calculus and extrinsic stains from your teeth. Bleaching is done to whiten your teeth.

As I mentioned RCTs start at 80KD.
They go up in price based on case difficulty. A single rooted tooth RCT is cheaper than a 4 rooted tooth RCT. A case retretment is more expensive that a new case.

How much does it cost to get them?
1- I wish “Bayan Dental” concentrates at customer satisfaction and loyalty, rather than just magnetizing their ‘POCKETS’(as the numbers were crunched above).
2- You’d never have things “done right the first time;” and I guarantee it; I personally know three dissatisfied patients that aren’t willing to comeback for additional visits, due to the fact of poor attention on customer service, quality assurance, and control.

Premoplars(two roots) = 130KD
Molars = 165-195KD (depending on the numbers of canals in each root)
RCT re-treatments = 200KD
After root canal therapy a tooth needs to be re-build and crowned. Rebuilding costs 75-100KD. A Crown costs 200KD

3- As being “creme de la creme,” you don’t tell me where to go! There are many competing clinics that are willing to seek your satisfaction and bend backwards to make you walk-out fully satisfied.
4- And FYI the best of the best are in the “Government” sector here. We’re proud enough to have expat relatives come to Kuwait for services offered in MoH. Go and see the veterans that dedicated more than 30 years to serve Kuwait.
5- If a person does not efficiently allocate services rendered to payments proportionally, then he lacks being wise and “fooled-up.”

Ok a few things… I only know a few things about veneers, but please clarify, if I’m mistaken…
In the process, in human terms, they remove/shave off most of your tooth, to have only the base, and then they fit the veneer onto the left-over tooth. Am I not right?
Therefore, you must get anesthesia, or else it’ll hurt like a mother.. right?
And they dont last forever, they only last 10-20 years..?
I personally know that the best doctor in Los Angeles (that works on celebrities, that actually do have the perfect hollywood smiles) charges $1000 a tooth, more or less around 300 KD. Why is it as expensive in Kuwait? I mean, did we turn into Beverly Hills while I was napping??

Bunny teeth to some people, I’m one of them, are considered cute teeth. What is important is that they match your smile and that your teeth are white and healthy.
Solutions for bunny teeth include:
1. Orthodntic treatment
2. Veneers
Veneers are not more prone to cavities given that it is done properly.
Teeth whitening has no permanent side effects. Sensitivity is the only side effect, which is only a temporary side effects, it will go away in 48 hours.
Wisdom teeth removal can be done by our Oral Surgeon or our Periodontist.

Tutu: The amount thats shaved off is very minimal, around 0.3mm. From what I read they can last for over 20 years, the only reason they don’t say it lasts for 30 or 40 or 50 years is because they haven’t been around for that long.
I will definitely NOT be sharing my before and after pictures. I will share some before and after pictures of strangers though :)
i’ve lived in kuwait for 13 years and have learned a few things along the way, for instance, if you go to Mubarak Hosptal in Jabriya next to it is the Faculty of Dentistry.Go there earlyish in the morning and ask to see a dentist. A file will be opened for you.A student will treat you closely supervised by a qualified, experienced dentist. You will not pay for the work, but may pay a little for materials (eg if you have a bridge, etc). My friends have used the service for years and had good results. One couple saved about 6,000 pounds in dental fees over what they’d have paid forgoing privately.

Veneers are mainly used for front teeth. They are thin porcelain shells glued to the front surface of your teeth to give you a nicer shape and a whiter shade. Your dentist will recommend the number of veneers you need, some patients need one, others patients need eight or even 10 in each arch.

300KD a tooth, my word! I will say that my husband had a very good one time experience with Bayan. He went in for what he thought was a normal toothache but come to find his jaw had dislocated. They fixed him up basically for free!
And I’ve taken my children to the pediatric dentist at Bayan in al fanar. He was simply amazing! Did a cavity filling for my son lickity split and had such a great demeanor! My daughter is looking forward to going back this summer for her next cleaning :D

Interesting to see the conversation “respond-time” at this forum. I have experienced difficulties in Kuwait to receive a proper response on phone and on direct emails very poor to no replay.
Nerveless, I like the marketing approach of this clinic in general and believe you should build an appropriate platform addressing your business, obviously, the US style those work in this e-Nvironment’- just my 2 cents!

I had a tongue piercing and which intially resulted in getting one of my tooth chipped.. now that part where it is chipped has decayed.. i’m really concerned and i don’t know what to do about it.. do you have any suggestion? please help!

Hello Radi,
You need restore the chipped tooth. I assume the chipped tooth is the one in the front, restoring it can be done by excavating the decay and filling it with a tooth colored filling material.
You need to fix it soon before the decay gets into the pulp of the tooth. If it gets into the pulp, then you need a root canal therapy.

If the decay is not into the pulp, the filling will cost you about 40KD. If the decay has reached the pulp, then you need a root canal therapy (110KD), a filling (40KD) and a crown (200KD).
