Burger Review: Napket

The Best Burger in Kuwait Challenge
Yes the burger challenge is still on, I didn’t forget about it I just took a little break. There are a lot of new places that opened up since the last time I reviewed a burger and I will start visiting them one by one soon. First from this new bunch is Napket. Although they’ve been open for awhile they just recently introduced a new menu which includes among other things, burgers.

I had three burgers to choose from, Napket Signature, The Western and Mushroom & Swiss. I decided to go with the Signature burger which has roasted tomatoes, caramelized onions and cheddar cheese. The burger comes with french fries on the side but since I don’t have fried food anymore I asked for alternatives and ended up going with roasted potatoes instead.

The burger took a while to come and once it did it looked overcooked and charred. I was hungry and really looking forward to a good burger but, the forecast wasn’t looking good. Luckily I was wrong. I took my first bite into the burger and got completely surprised. It wasn’t burnt, it wasn’t dry, it was delicious. The beef patty was the perfect thickness and there was this sauce that was slightly spicy but added a lot of flavor to the burger. The caramelized onions were also a great addition, I’ve really started enjoying them in my burgers and in this case they added a very nice touch of sweetness that went strangely very well with the spicy sauce. It would have been perfect except for one major flaw… the roasted tomatoes. They were just too juicy for the burger, so juicy that the bottom bun had become extremely soggy and the whole burger was dripping. It was easily the messiest burger I’ve had since the start of this challenge and I’ve mentioned it before how much I hate messy burgers.

The burger cost KD3.500 which is fairly decent for a dish at Napket especially since it also comes with roasted potatoes (or fries) and a small portion of green stuff (I think they call it salad). The final score is a 3.5 out of 5. Everything was great except for the sogginess and mess that came with it. I told the waiter about the problem and he said he would pass my feedback on to the chef so hopefully it will get fixed. Next time I am going with the Mushroom & Swiss instead.

Napket is located in Avenues
The cost of the Napket Signature Burger was KD3.500

Mark, I believe you are taking a role that is not meant for you. Kindly refrain from making those reviews without submitting your “foodie” credentials and I think its time that you recruit or subcontract a food writer/ critic that could ultimately substantiate his or hers knowledge of flavor combination, food trends, technique and ultimately a consensus that serves the local palette(Kuwait). All the best and nothing personal.

  9. Abdulmohsen says:

Just as Q said, you definitely should check out Meat Co.

  10. Mark says:

WTF248am: Is that your way of saying you want me to hire you?

  11. Mark says:

Meat Co. is one of the new places that opened, there is also Bistro 86 and a couple of other places.

  12. Yours Truly says:

I have tried the 3 mini burgers there and I was surprised with the taste as well. It was very delicious. But I had a problem with the cheese of one of them. Can’t remember which one though.

  13. Projectile Mayhem says:

You MUST try Fauchon’s burger… it’s a bit pricy (I think around 4 KD) but WOW is it fantastic… the meat quality of the Patty is best in Kuwait

  14. Mark says:

That’s already on my to do list as well.

  15. Haterhaute says:

Thanks for reminding me about Napket. DH and I haven’t been there in awhile but we’d been a few times before and really like it. I like their version of caprese and they had a roast beef sandwich there that was really good. Glad to hear they’ve jazzed things up on their menu a bit but I don’t think I’ll be trying that burger. It looks like crap and I could see it was soggy from the get-go.

  16. cajie says:

So Mark, as other have said…
Do you have “foodie” credentials or not? If you have, please post a picture of the certificate as proof – otherwise I will not take your reviews seriously.

  17. Mark says:

Cajie, of course I do or else I wouldn’t review food on my blog. Here is my diploma

It’s black and white because it’s a photocopy.

  18. AndyQ8 says:

pmsl @ Mark. That’s a quality certificate. I’ve seen many people apply for jobs here in Kuwait with certificates of similar quality!

WTF248am: It’s a blog FFS! All of the reviews are Mark’s personal opinions. Some people will agree, some won’t. But THAT’S THE POINT!
If you want food reviews by so-called professionals, then go look elsewhere. However, I doubt that the mainstream media would spend the time or effort writing over 20 reviews of burgers in Kuwait.
    – Keep up the good work Mark.
    – Get back in the kitchen at Napket WTF248am!

Burger reviews and the so called best burger this and best burger that is such a f****n cliche and a waste of valuable time. Chefs, restauranteurs and bloggers move on :-)

  21. Dina says:

Mark..what other restuarants are you planning to visit soon for your best burger challenge??

Love your food reviews….so analytical and very descriptive! i enjoy food critiquing myself..and ur pretty good at that.. Looking forward to more reviews..keep them coming!

  22. WTF248am says:

    Dina: Analytical….really?!

  23. suzan says:

Why are people here including the blogs obsessed with food in general, and fast/junk food in particular? Every blog is commenting on food, and food and more food!!! seems like an addiction to me

  24. Mark says:

Not all burgers are junk food.

  25. Haterhaute says:

Is it an addiction? Or just a way to find enjoyment in a daily necessity?

  26. Mark says:

    What is? Burgers?

  27. Haterhaute says:

Burgers or any food in general.. We need to eat to stay alive. Why not pay attention to or/and enjoy what we eat?

  28. Mark says:

I would say its the options we have in front of us. I don’t think anyone will say no to eating healthy if the food is good. We eat unhealthy because unhealthy is available and it’s cheap.

  29. Haterhaute says:

I think it’s possible for healthy to be fast and cheap, if you have the gumption to make it be so. But as you said, from a nutrition standpoint burgers can be on either side of the spectrum. It all comes down to ingredients and preparation.

  30. Imtiaz says:

    McDonalds FTW!
