Burger Review: Slider Station

Black Widow Slider Station
The Best Burger in Kuwait Challenge
When someone mentioned in one my previous burger posts about a KD12 burger at Slider Station I knew I had to try it. Thats why I was really looking forward for having lunch today with my two friends at Slider Station. Once I got the menu I just flipped through it looking at the prices until I found what I was looking for, the Black Widow priced strategically at KD11.750. On paper the Black Widow sounded delicious; Wagyu beef patty topped with wild mushrooms, melted Brie cheese, black truffle mayo on a dark poppy seed bun and served with goose fat fries on the side. It was just mouth watering to read which led to a friend of mine ordering it too.

Black Widow Slider Station

Now someone had posted that they deliver the Black Widow on a boat so I was expecting some kind of miniature pirate ship to set sail on the Slider Station bar conveyor belt and head towards my seat (don’t ask why). Instead the Black Widow rolled out on a regular plate which was long like a ship but thats were the similarities ended. No pirate ship, big disappointment, minus three stars! Seriously though the presentation of the burger was good, not as dramatic as the Prime & Toast burger but the Black Widow did look more sinister, kinda like the burger that Darth Vader would have. I took the plate off the belt, set it in front of me then quickly grabbed the burger and took my first bite. I am a huge fan of Brie and this was my first time having it with a burger and it was just really unusual in a very good way. It wasn’t the cheese alone but the mayo and the wild mushrooms, all combined it gave it this slightly sweet delicious flavor. The bread was perfect and patty was great although to be honest I don’t think I could tell the difference between a Wagyu patty and regular patty. Now the thing that really annoyed me with the burger was how messy the it was to eat. This has to be the messiest burger I have ever eaten in my life! With the first bite half the burger slid out of the bun and all the cheese and mayo ended up covering my hand. Even after readjusting it the patty kept trying to slide out. It was extremely annoying and all the toppings kept falling into the plate. With a KD12 burger every topping that falls amounts to around half a dinar so of course I had to keep picking up the mushrooms and sauce and pasting it back on top of the burger. It was ridiculous!

slider station

The burger was amazing though, the best I’ve had in this burger challenge so far. But, it was too messy to eat and it could have been slightly bigger. If it wasn’t for the fries I don’t think it would have filled me. I would also be interested to try the same burger just with a regular beef patty and for half the price. Now price as I mentioned won’t have an effect on the final rating but that doesn’t mean I can’t talk about it. KD12 for a burger is not cheap, its not even expensive, its super expensive. I imagine the cost is high because of the ingredients but its just too expensive (at least for me) to have it again. Value for money, I think I would have felt more comfortable paying around KD8, just having it priced under KD10 psychologically seems reasonable. Great burger though and final score is a 4 out of 5, the highest so far in this review and a really high score.

Slider Station have a website which you can check [Here]
The cost of the Black Widow Burger is KD11.750

You have to try a burger at the Crowne Plaza – Rib Eye. For some reason they season it with something and the meat itself is just great. They do a nice bread/chip with dips before hand too that is really nice. They are cheap too, but I don’t know there is something they do with the meat I just love. I don’t eat steak but LOVE burgers.

12 kd burger!!holy shit…didn’t even know burgers could get that expensive…

  3. 3. crocko rock | March 18th, 2008 at 9:23 pm

Hmmm….have to be a little suspicious here Mr. Mark. I seem to remember you being friends with the owner of this joint?

Quite weird how you didn’t deduct major points despite the burger being (according to your review) super sloppy.

And 12 KD is utterly ridiculous for a burger.

  4. 4. shopa | March 18th, 2008 at 9:28 pm

    their meat tastes weird tho

  5. 5. Patrick | March 18th, 2008 at 9:31 pm

    12 KD = 45$ = Sushi. lol.

  6. 6. Mark | March 18th, 2008 at 9:39 pm

crocko rock yes I am friends with the owner, not friends actually but I do know the guy. If you want to think conspiracies you could come up with one for every review to be honest.

  7. 7. guessed | March 18th, 2008 at 9:42 pm

Well I’m glad you found it enjoyable. I’ll just have to take your word for how good it tastes because there’s no bloody way I’d pay 12 KD for a burger and fries!

  8. 8. Mark | March 18th, 2008 at 9:44 pm

I am wondering if the patty was regular patty not Wagyu how much cheaper it would be…

  9. 9. Nubo | March 18th, 2008 at 9:49 pm

What’s the point of frying fries in goose fat? Why not fry them in lard instead, it’s cheaper, and it will block your arteries just as well, if not better.

  10. 10. D | March 18th, 2008 at 9:59 pm

your opinion is biased. you deducted points for Prime & toast burger for being messy but DIDNT deduct any for slider’s. I wonder why. and you complained about the prime & toast having too much bread/ingredients that you couldnt even taste the beef batty, while the picture of the Black Widow shoes it has MORE ingredients/bread than Prime.

Im not standing with anyone here but its obvious that your personal relations is interrefering with your burger challenge scores. not only that but so far you were tasting normal classic/cheese burger and suddenly ur jumping to Wagyu with mushrooms?!?! definitely it will taste better y33ni, logically speaking. The burgers you eat should be the same everywhere when u do the trial to make ur final judgement.

  11. 11. Mark | March 18th, 2008 at 10:04 pm

I did deduct points for being messy, thats why it didn’t get a 4.5
Also more ingredients doesn’t equal loss points, I don’t know where you got that idea from. Prime & Toast the burger tasted complicated, like nothing fit together while this burger was very smooth. Also I prefer Brie over cherry tomatoes in my burger, how is that wrong?

Regarding your second paragraph, my reviews are about finding the best burgers, I will try cheap ones I will try expensive ones, I dont care. Its about finding the best burger so yes I will try cheap burgers, next is Batriq for example but that doesn’t mean I can’t try expensive ones. Its about trying to cover as much ground as possible.

Anyway you don’t have to believe my taste or listen to me, like in my previous posts everyone is free to post their opinion on the burgers. If you think I am being biased thats your opinion but it isn’t a fact. You’ve tried the Black Widow and didn’t like it? Fine state your opinion here.

I am better off having a steak for that price.

  15. 15. Mark | March 18th, 2008 at 11:28 pm

Wazani II + Issa Maki for me and still have enough money left over for a coke

  16. 16. Patrick | March 18th, 2008 at 11:56 pm

You guys need to chill out. He’s just reviewing burgers! That’s hilarious to come up with conspiracy theories about this. I’d be shocked if this burger didn’t receive over 3 stars, it costs 12 KD and for that price, it sure better taste good.

It’s not the end of the world if this burger got more stars then any other burger, it’s just a burger challenge, after all. lol.

  17. 17. Yara | March 19th, 2008 at 12:07 am

Try Gaucho Grill its the best :)

  18. 18. Mark | March 19th, 2008 at 12:08 am

I will, maybe over this long weekend

  19. 19. ray | March 19th, 2008 at 12:53 am

its because of the black truffle … this ingredient is very expensive and DELICIOUS as well. the owner can replace it with fage3 ;) heheh … the price will be more reasonable

  20. 20. tru | March 19th, 2008 at 1:16 am

expensive burgers are novelty burgers, its for someone that has an advanced tastebud or someone that just tries it beause its expensive. to someone that doesn’t care about quality exotic ingredients the search has to be for simple ingredients and reasonable price.

  21. 21. tru | March 19th, 2008 at 1:19 am

btw the Madison or SS is their best ! keeps your pockets intact.

  22. 22. Angelo | March 19th, 2008 at 6:06 am

I wonder what would my American friends say if I told them that we have a $33 burger in Kuwait? I bet they will be like WTF.

Again, I suggest the Triple Prime Burger from Ruby Tuesday. It’s not the best but it’s certainly worth the addition in your prestigous reviews :)

  23. 23. dude | March 19th, 2008 at 6:47 am

angelo- there are plenty of burgers in the states for over 50 dollars…in New York and in other gourmet restaurants there.

  24. 24. MYK | March 19th, 2008 at 7:09 am

It was me who suggested it, I knew you’d like it :) Too bad I’m on a no meat diet this week. I’m going to break my fast with a black widow ;)

  25. 25. LeP | March 19th, 2008 at 7:58 am

    arent most burgers sloppy?!

  26. 26. Rakan | March 19th, 2008 at 8:10 am

How did you have it .. medium-well?

  27. 27. crocko rock | March 19th, 2008 at 8:33 am

Angelo, you can leave your friends in even more Awe when you tell them – oops – sorry, I meant $45 (not $33 ) for a patty.

    Welcome to Kuwait….

  28. 28. Twix86 | March 19th, 2008 at 9:13 am

Any discount if we want to try it..do you have was6a from your friend?

  29. 29. Mark | March 19th, 2008 at 9:19 am

don’t know if he would be willing to make discounts on the Black Widow for 248AM readers. he checks the blog so will see what he says to that.

  30. 30. Mishari | March 19th, 2008 at 9:23 am

    Angelo,

I remember reading once that there were a couple of burgers in New York that went for over $50, so your American friends shouldn’t be too surprised.

    But how about this:

    http://philipgolingai.blogspot.com/2007/03/where-burger-is-worth-its-weight-in.html

check out the link. By their estimation the burger is cheap when you factor in all the ingredients that went into making it!!!

  31. 31. zaydoun | March 19th, 2008 at 11:16 am

Angelo… Mishari beat me to it… if your American friends are from the “flyover states” they will naturally be shocked by these prices; people in New York are used to expensive burgers with premium ingredients. They’re no longer a novelty.. I once tried one myself, a $28 burger stuffed with short ribs and foie gras. How’s that for over-indulgence?!

Mark.. I must admit I had a similar reaction to D re your review of Prime & Toast’s burger. I tried it when they first opened and it was pretty good. But anyway, to each his own… food is subjective and I don’t see any conspiracy theories

And I was at Slider Station last night for the first time in ages, but didn’t read your review until now…. I had my usuals and they were excellent. Next time I’ll try the KD 12 burger out of curiosity. AND IT BETTER BE GOOD!!!

Still love the Hub and Gaucho though

  32. 32. Mark | March 19th, 2008 at 11:18 am

Ah you reminded me, still need to try Burger Hub. Can anyone recommend a burger their, I’ve NEVER been to Burger Hub!

  33. 33. hammoodee | March 19th, 2008 at 11:26 am

burger hub patties taste/smell like “dihin 3adany” ;O however they have this tastey fries with vegetables thingy and red bull yum

  34. 34. jooj | March 19th, 2008 at 11:45 am

I second the dihin 3adany comment. The two times ive been there, and had very small meals, ive felt felt very queezey and Im guessing its from the excess oil in the chips and the burgers.

Mark, you cant end your search without trying the Wagyu at Munch. I had it a couple of days back at 10 am in the morning after having read your blog. It was tasty and a bargain at KD 4! but its also on the ’small-ish’ side so I can see you ordering 2 of them to feel fully satisfied and it doesnt come with fries which is just fine by me but I can see you lamenting your woes at that…

    happy munching

  35. 35. Mark | March 19th, 2008 at 12:03 pm

Munch! Yes also forgot about that. I still got a lot more places to review!

  36. 36. cajie | March 19th, 2008 at 12:07 pm

But what about “Le Big Mac” ?

  37. 37. Mark | March 19th, 2008 at 12:09 pm

ok so what do i still have left?

    McDonalds
    Hardees
    Burger King
    Gaucho Grill
    Sheraton
    4 Points
    Applebees
    Chilis
    Burger Hub
    Munch

Anythng else? I am thinking of leaving McDonalds, Burger King and Hardees out.

  38. 38. sd | March 19th, 2008 at 12:19 pm

I guess more you pay the better you get and it better be good. Also people have there ranges, the only thing is that you have to categories this, you can go the best place and pay more. The only this about this review you are not categorizing your offerings and the ratings. So if you add more stars to more money means nothing.I feel rather you should have added all the stars for this one according to your formula.

  39. 39. Mark | March 19th, 2008 at 12:20 pm

Sorry sd but these reviews are very focused on just the burgers. Location, cost and service for example are not included in the review.

  40. 40. pearls | March 19th, 2008 at 12:52 pm

    where will you eat tonight

  41. 41. Equalizer | March 19th, 2008 at 1:26 pm

mark i’m gonna make this burger a bit more accessible to readers. All 248am.com readers could get the black widow for 8.5 KD till July 31st. All they have to do is mention the site when they order.

  42. 42. Aliman | March 19th, 2008 at 1:50 pm

Ok now that sounds like a deal!!! must try the black widow when im back in town!!
on another note you should try the living colors burger at Living colors, had it at their shuwiekh branch (since its next to my office) and it was suprisingly good.
I would also say that for the sake of the challenge you should try ruby tuesdays, in order to figure out which one is the best between those and applebees and chillis.

    Now thats pretty cool!

pearls: just got back from fudds so it will be a fudds review tonight.

  44. 44. Mishari | March 19th, 2008 at 3:41 pm

    Mark

A few you might also try, now, to clarify, i’m not recommending any of these burgers, cause i tried a few of them and didn’t like them, but just thought that they could make your burger challenge more complete.

GBK – either marina or avenues

    Hashi

since your doing all the american food chains might as well add TGI Fridays, though i doubt they have anything good.

Burger Bar (the one next to dasman roundabout)

    Burger co.

    Casper and Gambini’s

    Nathans

    Nino’s

  45. 45. Ansam | March 19th, 2008 at 3:45 pm

It was me who mentioned that burger ;-) YAAAY 4 of 5 for my suggestion. hehehe and I never said PIRATE I said ship or boat! I cant remember!

“With a KD12 burger every topping that falls amounts to around half a dinar so of course I had to keep picking up the mushrooms and sauce and pasting it back on top of the burger. It was ridiculous!” <— LOL this so funny and true in a way! hehehe

  46. 46. Mark | March 19th, 2008 at 3:48 pm

Damn I keep forgetting places, ok GBK, Hashi and Burger Bar have to definitely be on the list.

  47. 47. Pink Moon | March 19th, 2008 at 4:30 pm

Mark I agree you should leave out mcdonalds, hardees, and burger king. If you are gonna start doing the fast food places you’ll never finish. Plus i dont think frozen patties will win so whats the point.

  48. 48. naser | March 19th, 2008 at 5:57 pm

Dont forget nino ! I heard its one of the best

  49. 49. PUX | March 19th, 2008 at 6:22 pm

    I highly recommend NINO !!!

  50. 50. Angelo | March 19th, 2008 at 7:13 pm

    @Dude
    @Mishari
    @Zaydoun

Thanks guys for that piece of info. I knew they are expensive burgers in the US but honestly didn’t know they are quite common in NYC. Well, most of my friends are from Colorado so I bet they will be surprised anyway.

    @Crocko Rock

And that’s the reason my friend I’m a Psychology/Biology major. I suck at math…even the basic ones :D

  51. 51. sara | March 19th, 2008 at 11:59 pm

12kd price 4 a burger in slider its great price perfect its right becuz sliders is a great place 4 anything u ask 4 i am amazied that the price 4 a burger is just 12kd wow cool better check it!

  55. 58. miss ghesquiere | December 19th, 2008 at 8:51 pm

it could have been slightly BIGGER?? i had one it was the size of a flipping mountain!!!! and the fires were enough for five people!! but i was the most amazing burger ive ever had in my life. oh, and the different between a regular patty and wagyu is that wagyu is more melt-in your mouth and juicy and delicious and amazing and fantastic and the marbling of the beef itself is different.

  56. 60. Noro | June 18th, 2009 at 9:47 pm

Does this competition include sliders?? If so I would TOTALLY reccomend Nino’s. It’s listed under appetizers as Ruotini and they are absolutely delish!! They are REAL sliders and have this delicious special sauce on them (not sure what the sauce is. ;) My whole family agrees that they are great and I think we all agree that the Nino sliders and In ‘n out burgers (California) are tied for our favorite burger in the entire world :D So if you want to, I would say write a review for them. (It comes with 5, incase you are wondering, so they’re quite filling) Sorry if there are any typos, I’m kinda tired and wanna go to bed!!
