In the 12 months since i've been back, i just open my window, smile WIDELY, say "sorry I don't speak arabic", give him my passport (which any police guy just ever looks at the pic in), when he says "lee-since" I just say, "it's at home"... and the 4 times I've been stopped i get my passport back and waved on. Might be worthwhile to just give up and try that instead Mark, especially if you have a standby Canadian driving license to go with your passport (so it looks like you're just visiting and are here on your 'home country' license). all this hassle makes it almost worthwhile driving around without a damn license.
