Yeah…if you can get a land line! We recently signed up for the current Viva internet deal. It’s supposedly truly “unlimited.” I asked at least 4 different people before I started to believe it. We’ll see.

What is it with the system over here? I’m so annoyed. How is it that people new to a company can sign up for a special offer and get something that long-standing customers have to pay twice the price for? My contract doesn’t expire until November and there are never offers then. It is a totally ridiculous system over here. Just reduce the damn prices for everyone!

I just went to the fair (infoconnect) earlier this week. I got 2 mb from quality net for KD 225 with freebies that include a modem, 4 g usb drive, nokia phone, Norton Anivirus, and scratch and win coupons.

I had United Networks before I signed with Qualitynet, but when my membership ended on 25 of Jan, I thought I’d wait for the fair. I called them and they informed me that the offer is only for new users which does not make any sense, oh and only for clients with memberships that end in February, which again is bullshit. To renew my united I had to pay KD 396 for 1 mb.

I heard so many bad things about fasttelco. Too many censorships I hear.

Kems oh lets not go there, coz that’s what I have at work…

That left me with Qualitynet, and don’t know if I’m gonna regret that or not, we’ll see :p

10.750KD/month for 512 yesterday i paid for 1 year to United Networks.

They are having some special promotion going on.

I tried all of these companies :)

Looking at the prices Fastelco looks to have the lowest prices. The problem with them is blocking sites that don’t display anything wrong.

I classify these companies from best to least as the following:

    1. KEMS

    2. Qualitynet/United

    3. Fastelco

  17. 17. Talloush | February 5th, 2009 at 10:04 am

Let’s see how much internet costs here in Abu Dhabi. Here rates are quoted per month, but I’ve quoted the cost per year.

    Etisalat Al-Shamil High-Speed DSL

    4Mbps (”Superior User”): Dhs 5388/ KD 432
    2Mbps (”Heavy User”): Dhs 4188/ KD 336
    1Mbps (”Active User”): Dhs 2988/ KD 240
512 Kbps (”Moderate User”): Dhs 2268/ KD 182
256 Kbps (”Light User”): Dhs 1788/ KD KD 143
    256 Kbps (”Limited Access – 15hrs/mo”): Dhs 948/ KD 76

Interesting comparison to Kuwaiti internet subscription rates…Still too effing expensive, though.

  18. 18. AbdulKareem | February 5th, 2009 at 11:08 am

Qualitynet is the better ISP in Kuwait, if latency/packet loss/bandwidth output matter to you.

And no wonder there has been packet loss/high latency for the last couple of days, everyone has upgraded their internet and the routers and switches in Kuwait can’t handle the added demand for data.

Everytime qualitynet has these offers, their internet slows down for atleast a week. I find this silly, because they should upgrade their switches first, so that when people upgrade they get to use the full speed of their connection, and not have problems for weeks until it’s fixed. Their “upgrade now, and we’ll fix later” policy is dumb.

  19. 19. Moe | February 5th, 2009 at 11:30 am

well well well, the internet prices again, ok, to be more precise about these offers

FT: u pay additional charges for activation & modem or sort , I am not sure what are they for but some say set up fees some say modem fees and the same thing goes for Kems, they are just not so transparent with their ads and they dont offer more & they are not part of info connect, i guess they are indirectly trying to get qualitynet’s or united networks customers since those are in the expo, oh yea fastelco is also there through some reseller!!!, last year Kems got kicked out from the expo cz they where there through some one :-/… donno about FT though… i have the offers print outs right here, they are just a piss off, u have to call to have it clear, and some of qnet offers are a bit confusing but here goes! its detailed

    Qnet rates:

no hidden fees and on top of it u get a norton client + a 4 gb or 8 gb flash memory + a nokia mobile phone + a router + a coupon scratch n u may win for every 20 KD spent.

as for the family / gaming package, u get additional 256Kbps reserved for gaming (all consoles and stations) thats on top of your existing bandwidth + original pc game client + 4 maintenance visits + norton client + wireless access point + router

light surf 1mb has P2P enabled, u get 1mb for everything but 128 for p2p same goes for 512 light surf, 256kbps light surf has no p2p access

then the professional package that combines qnet + wnet together and prepaid dsl as well

United offers as per the ads

ultra light free registeration, installation & modem

small business 1mb for 6 months for 199 kd.

    thats all about :)

  20. 20. Moe | February 5th, 2009 at 11:32 am

by the way guys, who ever wants to obtain those offers from any ISP, u can still obtain it in a way they u get the higher speed and u pay like a bit extra after they adjust ur remaining credit, i blv that applies to all.

Btw two days left on those offers

  24. 24. gilly_54 | February 5th, 2009 at 2:24 pm

Hmm, I currently pay around 143KD a year here in Lebanon for 512/64 (down/up) cable connection (and it varies too depending on traffic, most of the time its around 200-300kbps -_-)
Can’t believe Qnet is offering 8Mbps, but wow it’s expensive as heck.

  25. 25. Moe | February 5th, 2009 at 3:05 pm

Guys, its not QoS…..its bandwidth shaping based on ports, komosol, try it on xbox or any other station, torrent ur downloads n check the gamin

beta testing was done previously with customers who complained about latency in gamin while downloading, proof of concept, any 1 has tried it yet? i did, so far its ok, I did as a tester though cz i am part of those who complained about it

  30. 30. Dave | February 5th, 2009 at 4:59 pm

1200kd for 8mbps. You just have to laugh. There is no excuse for that pricing. Absolutely laughable. You can get faster than that in the UK for 8kd or so a month, and the UK isn’t even that cheap.

  31. 31. KS | February 5th, 2009 at 5:37 pm

Got to agree with Dave… the pricing is ridiculous and insulting, all of them! I mean how do they come up with those figures?

just go to http://www.broadband.co.uk to see how much of a rip off these companies in q8 are… they must be earning a fortune

  32. 32. AnonyMiss | February 5th, 2009 at 5:57 pm

    Dave

You are right! there is a big damn difference in term of ISP’s prices!!
but look to it from the bright side, we pay zero per minute for land calls and KD 30 yearly subscription! Guess that would make a good balance for our Comu expenditures!

  33. 33. Abdullah | February 5th, 2009 at 7:59 pm

I don`t know , but I think FT blocks alot of website and torrents .

  34. 34. 3azeez | February 5th, 2009 at 8:16 pm

Dave, there is excuse… when I was effing about this high price they responded to me that alkhrafi has it in his farm.

I’m not sure how is that related to us, but this was their response.

  35. 35. snow snow snow | February 5th, 2009 at 9:28 pm

FUCKING SHIT!!! 1200 kd per year for 8 MB?

I pay 150 KD A YEAR for 8 MB in UK!!! it’s even less than 150 KD!!

OMG quality net and all other providers in kuwait need to kiss my ass

  36. 36. moose | February 5th, 2009 at 11:50 pm

FT blocks wikipedia articles, nuff said

qualitynet is still the best, even thought theyre expensive and still, crap.

  37. 37. Q80Warlock | February 6th, 2009 at 12:30 am

It’s not possible to gain all speeds offered everywhere, 8Mbps is possible if the DSLAM is under 2 miles away, most copper lines here are ages old so I guess the distance gets shortened to 1.0~1.5 miles.

  38. 38. niQa | February 6th, 2009 at 12:45 am

my mom (in kuwait) just made an international phone call to me just to ask me what company she should go for. i’m clueless of course, but i recommended Qnet’s 2 Mbps thanks to this post ;)

  39. 39. FoRZa_iTaLia | February 6th, 2009 at 12:59 am

its expensive cuz of the lack of competition, but people can still afford it – no biggie :)

  40. 40. AbdulKareem | February 6th, 2009 at 3:58 pm

Moe, can you explain a little more clearly about the gaming package with qnet? I’d call them, but I don’t want to waste my time talking to a sales rep that doesn’t know the internet working of a computer, let alone the internet.

  41. 41. Khalid | February 6th, 2009 at 5:34 pm

Qualitynet is the “most expensive Broadband Internet Service Provider (ISP)” in the Middle East, according to a report by MEED published in July 2008. In KSA and UAE, the 1MB/S is about 40% of what we pay Qualitynet. The ISP sector should be opened to competition. I have no doubt that Al Ghanim will revise their pricing when people start switching. Don’t get me wrong, Satellite ISP is available, but in no way considered viable competition due to the downtime and reliability issues.

  42. 42. cajie | February 6th, 2009 at 7:26 pm

    @snow snow snow
NO SHIT. 150KD for 1 year for a 8MB connection in UK????

I guess a liter of petrol costs a wee bit more than 65 fils over there? We won’t ask BP to kiss our asses though :)

  43. 43. AbdulKareem | February 6th, 2009 at 8:20 pm

Personally, I wouldn’t mind paying this much (it is alot compared to other countries, it’s an EXTREMELY high amount), if, and only IF, the ISP’s excuse wasn’t the “oh, the operating costs for running an ISP in this part of the world is extremely high” – because it’s not.

If they would be honest (lol which companies do this if they’re serious about making money anyways) and just come out and say that “hey, we’re taking advantage of the fact that people in this part of the world are clueless when it comes to internet and computers, this coupled with the fact that their is a small amount of competition means that we can charge an extremely high amount and exploit this to our advantage”.

I wish I could live to see the day when a foreign ISP is let into Kuwait. Only time we’ll see that maybe, is once the oil has run out. AT&T or any other respectable American ISP would force every Kuwaiti ISP to either change drastically, or shutdown.

  44. 44. hilaliya | February 7th, 2009 at 7:25 pm

I want Verizon, Orange, BT, AOL, every foreign ISP to enter Kuwait. I’d even settle for ETISALAT.

  45. 45. Yusuf Maimoon | February 7th, 2009 at 8:39 pm

Fasttelco prices are offer prices which end today! (so if you are thinking to buy, buy it today before 11.59pm. – Not advertising or anything…

But yea i think KEMS is the best. And seems their offer is still going on after the infotech 09 fair..

But haf to say for all of them.. service here sucks.. NO one knows what they are doin..

  46. 46. AnonyMiss | February 7th, 2009 at 9:05 pm

After reading your reviews guys I’ve registered with Gnet instead of FT!!!! which most of you did not recomend! “fast telshit”–> “holla” he he he liked the world, which was the main reason to forget all about FT!

2MB for KD 225 8 GB USB + Nokia mobile + norton antivirus + Wireless modem + scratch and win copons + a big smile!

  47. 47. Mark | February 7th, 2009 at 9:13 pm

it sucks I already paid like KD380 for my 2MB connection which expires in August.

  48. 48. AnonyMiss | February 7th, 2009 at 9:43 pm

If I were you I would sue them :)
it is KD155 difference not 10 or 20!!!!!!

  49. 49. AnonyMiss | February 7th, 2009 at 9:46 pm

    looool Gnet = Qnet

  50. 50. mohammad | February 8th, 2009 at 7:25 pm

viva came with 20 k.d. per month as they claim 7 mb speed ….but sad to say i was expecting from thier marketing management to act smarter then what they did and offer…………if they made it 5 k.d. per month …they would have won they whole internet market and consumers in kuwait…………………….viva managers do u read me?……………….

  51. 51. Ahmad | February 9th, 2009 at 2:31 pm

I think the Qnet prices above are misleading. I called them before going to Info to re-subscribe and asked about the price of a 3Mb connection and they said 499KD (and this is after they asked for my phone number to check my account).

Imagine my shock when I went to Info and I was told by Qnet that they can’t give me a 3Mb connection because my existing one is already 3Mb. The one I’m eligible for is 4Mb and higher and it will cost at least 675KD.

I tried reasoning with the sales rep that I only need 3Mb, but he told me about Qnet’s policy of not allowing people to downgrade their speed.

So beware if you’re considering upgrading your speed, you can’t go back once you do.

  52. 52. Kramos Anne | February 9th, 2009 at 5:25 pm

    fast telecom pricing is confusing.

    for 256kbps

    1m = 23
    3m=46.5
    6m=68.9
    12m=59

so 12months is cheaper than 6months?

    for 1Mbps

    6m=174.2
    12m=159

    never seen such pricing before…
    funny

  53. 53. AbdulKareem | February 9th, 2009 at 6:27 pm

Qualitynet policy of “once you upgrade you can’t upgrade is bullshit”, just raise your voice and ask for the manager. Work on them abit and they’ll downgrade you :)

Sometimes you need to sink down a couple of levels to get things done…

  54. 54. LoudDiskreet | February 11th, 2009 at 4:32 pm

i’m a crazy downloader n i need fast internet………….but since m leavin kuwait soon i thought i’d go for the viva internet……………….sicne it was at a reasonable price……….buh the big ****UP is tht, they claim 7.2mbps but the software they provide in the usb shows the max reaching up to 300kbps n when tested on sevral websites download reaches 2.4 mbps…………..still i dont feel the speed while browsing……..for example, it took me nearly 10seconds to open up your site! :P

is there anyway i can sue these people for FAKE ADVERTISING?!?!

p.s. i’ve complained to them twice already……….n still teh speed sux……! so effin pissin offf!

  55. 55. NaMmOoR | February 11th, 2009 at 9:03 pm

please Marc tell me what do you recommend and i’ll trade with you some nice Shawerma’s from Marroosh…

i’ve been with UnitedNetworks 2Mps and was fine, and now im with Zain 7.2Mps router and its fine but the download sucks sometimes and they limit that crap to 30Gbs Download and they kill me

    please advice

    thanks you guys

  56. 56. SanDMaN | February 11th, 2009 at 10:50 pm

AbdulKareem: So true about the isps with their offers and not upgrading their infrastructure first, I’ve been with Fasttelco whenever in Kuwait for the past 7 years now almost, and they’ve always had the fastest service, bandwidth wise, Latency, everything pretty much … compared to what i’d see at my friends’ places with other isps.

Bu every year, and ESPECIALLY this year since the infoconnect offers my connection is crap.. I’m getting pings to yahoo, google, even websites in Saudi, up until 2-3 am then they start dropping .. early morning before going to work.. it’s like 190 something 230 something.. adn the helpdesks… don’t get me started.. pages take 5 seconds or so to start loading, xbox live can’t find games on call of duty 5, 4, or anything else.. arrrrggghhh …I haven’t had my video crack fix for over 2 weeks now!!! what pisses me off the most is some of their helpdesk staff (some are actually friendly and useful) the rest ……get this… one actually tried to get me to test my bandwidth by downloading a driver offf of their website today, and then when i started to question whether he knew what he was talking about or doing, he told me “we are only responsible for your connection to us, not to the outside world, you do not have a problem”

    huh?

Still and this is direct to you NaMmOor they never capped my downloads, or throttled my connection, and they always manage to get their shit together albeit after a while.. they do block the hell out of some harmless sites that are open with other isps though … but hey that’s what proxy servers and sites are for :P

My connection is 2Mbps by the way…

  57. 57. boss | February 12th, 2009 at 8:59 pm

Hey Hey Yo There`s so so damn many Mis-leading info here Especially about Fast Telco !!!

1st of all to the Zain/Wataniya/Viva Subscribers, are you people kidding me ? i`v tried all of these shit and my download will stuck at 220 sometimes if i`m lucky this is just 2MB regular ADSL speed, so the 14.4 Mbps and the 7.2 Mbps is just the Speed of the Line itself not the Actual Internet Speed and don`t forget that you`ll get affected by the Traffic of other Clients connecting at the same time, so if you have the chance/ability to get ADSL connection PLEASE Ditch this stupid fake speed unstable 3G connection :/

For all the people bashing FT did you ever try it first to say shit about it ? sometimes the problems is related to routers, PC`s Firewalls etc. please make sure first before telling us what is not true !! and about the Customers Service with FT i get the Exact Same drama with QualityShit, all are same everywhere you`ll find an experienced customer service representative and a newbie one too !!

ok to get into the ISPs Subject: i had QualityShit Account since 2001 and i got sick of the Disconnect Issues maybe it was related to the their Speed Touch ADSL Modem (Lukhma Modem) !! so i Switched to FT when they Opened dunno the year exactly lol :p but i was waiting for them to open to cancel my QualityShit Account ASAP, anyway since that time i`ve never got Disconnect issues that was with their Arescom Modem too !!! it died on me on 2004 or to be more specific the technician didn`t have the experience to fix the problem and i was in the market to get a new ADSL Gateway so i got the Linksys G Wireless ADSL Gateway it died on me after nearly 4 years and lateley when i got the Stupid Linksys WA325G ADSL Gateway :/ the Disconnect Drama started again !!! linksys is not like before !! the N Series is nothing but a Bunch of BS Routers i was very very happy when i had my Linksys G Gateway :`( so to you people before judging about how bad is the ISP is always make sure that everything is fine 1st.

And to the people who says that FT is blocking the Torrents this is nothing but a QualityShit Hater BS i get Torrents all night long :) and about the stability of the Connection when i was on the QualityShit i get less KB/sec at peak time, the FT connection was and still Rock Solid it doesn`t matter Peak Time Khermis Time it is always stable.

a friend of mine with 1MB QualityShit connection is getting 65 KB/sec the funny thing is that i get 62 KB/sec with a FT 512 Connection LOOOL

BTW i`m at 2MB now and i`m so so damn Lucky/Happy i did wait until these days.

    Conclusion:

    QualityShit Wins by their Offers/Ads.

QualityShit = !!! just Offers/Third Parties Special Discounts they got discounts for nearly all major Kuwait Companies Employees if this thing didn`t exists am sure less people will subscribe with them, when i ask my friends why did you chose it i hear the same answer: 3a6ooni khasom emsawen 3arth ma3a dawami all because of the Dawam thingy this is their main success.
FT = less offers for new subscribers compared to QualityShit but they`re a little bit catching up with QualityShit offers now.

  58. 58. lensman | February 13th, 2009 at 6:22 pm

Hey, anyone know what are the prices for satellite internet? I heard Qnet is offering satellite services.

  59. 59. Moe | February 18th, 2009 at 5:19 pm

Dave, Khaled, Ahmad and the rest, 8kd a month for 8mb in usa or europe is based on overbooking, thats called shared bandwidth, QoS is not guaranteed….for ppl to go to these many countires and use the internet and still not understand what is based on.. thats ignorance

btw.. when u read a report ask for references… Kuwait is way cheaper that all of the GCC to be specific and to many other arab countries, compare like to like… understand that ALL GCC excpt Kuwait, they force users to use limited internet access, so many restrictions for torrents voip, streaming and downloads and others use what zain n viva does.. UP TO xxxx mb . who ever got the full speed at wnet or zain or even viva

Ahmad, i think that sales person at qnet was trying to rip u off!.. he misleaded u.. it is ridiculous that u cant downgrade, makes no sense at all and i am almost sure that it wouldnt be a policy an ISP would use! :P

lensman, they have it under the name of SkyDSL but i dont have much info about it
