Everyone, meet Ratchet

Ratchet my MacBook

My MacBook is here!! Its soooooooooooooo white (like me!!!). As with all my electronic devices I name them after characters from the Transformers cartoon. My MacBook is going to be called Ratchet who was the white doctor transformer. Everyone say hi…

The Box

update: Here are my first impressions…

- The edge of the MacBook below the trackpad where my wrists rest is sharp and so is causing red horizontal lines to appear
- The screen is fucking bright, brighter then my Lacie CRT which is right next to me
- The battery life is amazing, I got the MacBook at 12:30 and it had a 75% charge. I played with it a bit and then played it with through out most of my lunch (1-2) then came back to work and I have had my MacBook open ever since installing software and stuff and it still tells me I have 1 hour of juice left and its currently 4:06PM.
- It feels a lot bigger then the 12″ PowerBook
- No overheating issue so far and I haven’t even heard the fan come on
- I need more RAM, haven’t had any problems yet but I imagine everything would be moving a lot faster once I install 2GB of RAM
- Wifi reception is amazing, suddenly I see 5 networks where with the PowerBooks in the office I usually only see 1
- They keyboard feels normal, nothing weird at all
- The trackpad button feels a little soft
- I have absolutly no use for iSight
- I hate FrontRow and Dashboard, just disabled both
- I love how the MacBook closes.. no more latch, just like the old clamshell ibooks

And thats all for now…

    Hi Mark,
You mentioned that the Macbook was kept at the customs for some time. How much did you have to pay for the customs ?
Secondly, what was the shipping charges from USWS ?
I am asking you because I have just opened my USWS account. Still waiting to get an e-mail confirmation from them, though I can log into my account and see my mailbox address.
I am all set to place my first order for some camera gear. Your feedback will be appreciated.

  33. 34. holla | June 19th, 2006 at 8:46 pm

wow this some serious icy white nigga sheeet, nice! congrats mark.

  34. 35. Mark | June 19th, 2006 at 8:48 pm

hey cajetan it cost me $52 for customs which was a lot cheaper then i figured it would cost if you want u can figure out how much your item would cost by using USWS rate calculator. In amazon they usually have the shipping weight displayed on the product page, just use that weight to get an estimate.

  35. 36. Jackie | June 19th, 2006 at 11:54 pm

I want to see one up close and personal :r

  36. 37. Marzouq | June 20th, 2006 at 9:23 am

I saw both the black and white macbook.. and Im alll for the black! It looks great, but you know apple is over pricing it for no reason!

  37. 38. nora3d | June 20th, 2006 at 9:47 am

Congrats Mark, it’s really white and sleek :D
is it hard to find softwares for Mac in Kuwait? not original I mean

  38. 39. Cajetan Barretto | June 20th, 2006 at 12:01 pm

    Hi Mark,
I started shopping with the USWS mailbox. But the store that I was ordering from (www.bhphotovideo.com) is adding a $80 tax + $15 shipping. Thus the advantage of US shipping dissapears as direct shipping is around $120.
Is there any way I can avoid paying the $80 tax. Did you have to pay tax for your MacBook ?
    Regards

  39. 40. Mark | June 20th, 2006 at 12:05 pm

Cajetan thats why you should order from Amazon.com
Amazon.com doesnt charge tax. Sometimes if your order from a store located in the same states as your mailing address u get to pay tax. I am guessing bhphoto is located in new york.. On amazon if u order from a reseller the J&R u also pay tax but luckily for most electronic items on Amazon you get a choice of around 3 or 4 amazon retailers and they are mostly out of NY

I didnt pay tax for my MacBook

  40. 41. Yazeed | June 20th, 2006 at 11:09 pm

    congrats mark

i will be purchasing a macbook pro soon,
i was going to order it from amazon, but i am leaning torwards apple.com cause i want to upgrade the standard 512 ram to 1gb (1 module) so that i can add another 1gb from crucial

if i buy a standard one off amazon (cheaper, no tax) can i remove the original 512 and install two 1gb sticks?
is that possible? and is it easy? i know how to install ram, but its the original stick that i am worried about.

    thanks

  41. 42. Mark | June 20th, 2006 at 11:49 pm

    well firstly check out http://transintl.com/
there ram is one of the best and their prices might be cheaper then crucial.

secondly its better u DONT upgrade the RAM with Apple, their prices are really expensive. You can get the MBP with the 512 and later remove it and add 2 x 1GB if you want or add another 1GB to the 512. Whatever you decide it should be cheaper then the apple store. Calculate it and see.

Amazon also has a 150$ rebate, plus if you use A9 u get the 2% discount plus if u have an associate account thats another 25$ off :)

  42. 43. Yazeed | June 21st, 2006 at 12:19 am

    thanks for the info
    i know amazon is cheaper
but how easy is it to remove the original RAM?
from my understanding it is inside the laptop
not accessible from the RAM slot (which is for the empty ram slot)

  43. 44. Mark | June 21st, 2006 at 7:54 am

it is accessible from the ram slot just like the ram u will add.
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/85.4.4.html

its 2 floors, lower floor is original ram and upper floor is empty slot.

  44. 45. Yazeed | June 21st, 2006 at 7:34 pm

    oh ok
    thanks a lot mark.

  45. 46. TwaiF | June 25th, 2006 at 10:06 pm

hey mark its been like 6 days since you get Ratchet tell us more about it if you dont mind ,did you face the overheating problem ?

  46. 47. Aziz | July 7th, 2006 at 7:45 pm

hey all, long time reader first time poster…
Mark, you got me into buying macbook too. I ordered mine yesterday morning and it was shipped just before midnight. According to the UPS tracking it should arrive on Sunday ^_^
I have a question regarding the shipping though, when using a US mail address, are you still going to have your package insured during the whole trip to Kuwait? Cuz I think I read somewhere at ARAMEX site they don’t insure.

  47. 48. Mark | July 7th, 2006 at 7:49 pm

yo, it will probably arrive on monday since sunday they dont deliver.

about the package being insured i am not sure. i dont think so. btw u still using aramex? you should try ushopweship.com

  48. 49. Aziz | July 7th, 2006 at 8:09 pm

No I never used ARAMEX cuz read they don’t insure the delivary.
and just checked ushopweship.com… “the amount payable by UShopWEship if an item is lost of
Maximum liability amount payable is U$D 30/-”
So I don’t want to take any chances. :\
How come they don’t deliver on Sundays? UPS said “On Sunday GUARANTEED” heh. It just arrive at KOELN Germany *excited*

  49. 50. Mark | July 7th, 2006 at 8:12 pm

ah u r shipping it from the states to kuwait via ups?
usually when ordering from amazon packages never get delivered on sunday. it must be different internationally

  50. 51. Mark | July 7th, 2006 at 8:15 pm

  51. 52. Aziz | July 7th, 2006 at 8:34 pm

I highly doubt it, If government offices and many places in Kuwait close on Thursday and Friday… UPS does not deliver on Saturday and Sunday. Then they work only three days a week?! I think that page is for the US only.

  52. 53. Mark | July 7th, 2006 at 8:39 pm

yeah i meant countries where saturday and sunday are off.
where did u order your macbook from?

  53. 54. Aziz | July 7th, 2006 at 8:49 pm

    bhphotovideo.com
I usually order camera stuff from them.
