Thanks for the heads up and pointers. I’m sure you’re right. Heck, I got really surprised when I saw some of the “new” cereals boxes “buried” among “old” ones on the same self under that sale. A closer look showed that “glass cleaning liquid” apparently accidentally had spilled over them, and all you can see is colors bleached off on some sides of these boxes.

It’s only that I’m really not that knowledgeable with many of food products ingredients… my head gets dizzy with all those commercial names of many harmful things they mix in. But at least I do know that, e.g., Trans Fat (mostly found in biscuits) is so bad that it should be avoided at any cost. ^_^¡

Not to pick on you, NS, but I’m well aware of some possible transportation conditions and storage environments of such imported products, let alone SC’s dust-collecting shelves. But isn’t it the same for any imported products; not just those from the other side of the planet!

It’s really sad that this country falls short, though capable, at food industry department; probably except for diary and breads, which I -personally- am relatively happy with the local products.

So, why buy something old and waste the money. Your taste and stomach have rights on you to live fresh and happy (my personal opinion). I was told consumers like me is NOT good for today market because I grew up with the daily fresh food. At least here you can return easily if it is bad products. In Kuwait you do return but not easily.

pétalo: I did have many complaints directly with General Mills whom they carry many brands. The asked me to be on their panel testing their products. I refused because I don’t eat most of that junk and they add chemical to their food too….Besides when they export it is worse than here till they transport from their warehouse, customs, sitting in the dock then another custom with heat, bad handling. Except if they have their plants at a closer destination.

I used to shop regularly at Sultan Center for the last six ~ eight months, mainly for “General Mills” cereals and cereal bars, and sometimes ice-creams too. You might think I’m exaggerating here, but honestly, for ALL the food I looked at or purchased, had more than half of their life span already past!

The last time I was there was during the first week of Ramathan, where I noticed two things: this offer on nearly expired food, and the new cereals stock had surprisingly got fresher – only around quarter of the product’s life span has passed, much farther expiration dates than ever at Sultan Center for years!!

Their US import stuff is more expensive but you can’t find it anywhere else in Kuwait and its usually expensive only when compared to local products like Root Beer vs Pepsi price but thats not a fair comparison. US import Smacks cereal costs like KD1.750 while Middle East produced Smacks costs KD1.250. You can’t expect them to price both products equally when one logically costs more to import.

I think their prices on US imports are fair and I would rather pay this extra import fee and have the choice to purchase these products then not have that option at all. Imagine not being able to get Count Chocula, Chocolate Lucky Charms, Trix, A&W Root Beer etc..

The only item I’ve actually seen at Sultan Center that I think is super expensive is their Nutella & GO! But thats expensive even in the States.
