MonotoneTheist prob spends all his money secretly on alcohol, drugs and abortions for the filipino maids he impregnated while he preaches about religion on the internet LMFAO.

Seriously who cares what people spend their money on? It's their money. why give yourself a heart attack over it?

I have one thing to say about buying deseigner clothes in kuwait.. "ALL DRESSED UP AND NO WHERE TO GO!". As to the quality of desiegner clothes, you are not paying for the quality, you are paying for the name that is like an official stamp made for you just to prove that you spent that amount on that item of clothing. As for uniqueness.. hehe, we are in kuwait, all women have the same bags from the same deseigners, etc... its rediculas..
It's a huge rip off. First they make you think you need to wear clothes with their names on them, then they try to convince you to feel better when you do wear them, convincing you that u are now a better person.
one word tefahaat. I went through this faze when i was in my early 20's.
I used to shop weekly at Harvey Nick's and Harrod's since they were a short walking distance from our house in london. Been there, done that when i was a kid.. I've since corrected my ways.
However, if you do need to feel "special" and need the attention from small minded local idiots, or need to conform with them to feel accepted by them, or even to contend with them on who has been ripped off the most, then go ahead.
I am intitaled to my opinion.

Mark and Croco,

This isn't a point of disagreement between me and you guys. I do realize that many people care about the way they look, and that isn't necessarily a bad thing. What I am saying, however, is that some people take it way WAY over the top. This is what I have an issue with and do not understand the justification for at all.

And obviously you have to present yourself well at your place of work and generally dress for the occassion. I don't disagree with this at all, no one is suggesting that people should show up at formal meetings in shorts and flipflops. This is one end of an extreme, the opposite of which is insisting on buying ridiculously expensive clothes that are indistinguishable from cheaper ones just because they carry a certain brand name.

And just so we're on the same page here, this is just my opinion. I certainly can't say that what those people do is wrong because that's all relative, but I can definitely say that the justification for it isn't exactly profound, to put it mildly.

Usually, when you ask someone to explain why these clothing items are worth the money, they'd tell you it's because they look nice and feel comfortable. Well the obvious next question is, why not get something that looks and feels the same but is cheaper, and the justification for this usually is that the expensive item is "special" because it was made by a famous designer.

This really is what it all boils down to, some french dude made it, therefore it's cool. In reality, it isn't about the brand name, because the brand name in and of itself has zero bearing on the quality of the shirt, rather its about people's preception of the brand name and all the "glamor" attached to it. This is what I resent and deeply disagree with. Essentially, it's about showing off, otherwise the cheap shirt that feels and looks like the expensive shirt would've been the choice.

No offense to anyone, this is just how I feel about it.

Probably the above arguments are correct, the only issue related to the cost is the design and the brand, if production is moved to the asian market than prices will drop significantly. However I have to say there are a lot of creative people outthere providing cool designs without the brand tags, I dont see this is something that should delute the value of the item, tags are tags the main thing is how cool it will look on you. I dont see why someone should be killing themselves to wear a brand when it does not fit the mold. Unfortunately lots of women falls victims of this trap.

Monotheist, have to agree with Stan and Mark's points. YOU may not care what you dress like but a hell of a a lot of people do.

Example: if you showed up to a meeting wearing shorts and slippers, you wont get the same respect as walking in with a suit and tie. Likewise, if you went into McDonald's and the servers were all wearing their regular clothes, it would distort your image about the place.

Image is everything.

Monotheist some people do care about the quality of clothes and the uniqueness and style that comes along with certain brands.

Although Next and BHS might be fine with you, other people are looking for more and this is when brands come into place. You don't have to get luxury brands like Prada or Gucci, my favorite brands for example are Hurley and Volcom. I care about what I wear, just because you don't doesn't mean people who do are wrong.

And its not only a Kuwait thing, its a world wide thing, you have people like you who don't care about style or fashion and people who do.

btw, I wear generic black sneakers that you could have a forensic scientist examine all day and he wouldn't be able to tell who made it. I've had them for 4 years and I'll keep wearing them till they get torn appart. Then I'll patch them up at the jam3iya and keep wearing them for another 4 years.

Stan,

Yes, I'm a jealous little money pinching man because I don't shop for ghey overpriced clothes at Villa Moda, what an excellent observation. I know what a sale is, I already defined it for you in my first comment.

I don't care about the difference between Prada and Next, if it looks good and feels comfortable I'm going to wear it regardless. I couldn't care less abouth whether or not it was made by some famous Italian guy, it could be made by Jamshed the local Pakistani tailor for all I care. I guess I don't enjoy "the finer things in life" (read: the ridiculously superficial and pointless things in life).

Just because eid is around the corner doesn't mean you need to go nuts at villa moda or anywhere else. This mass consumersim crap isn't uniquely Kuwaiti anyway, you should see how people react to holidy shopping in the states. It happens in most countries with malls in the world and it receives the same criticism everywhere.

Monotheist, you sound like a jealous little man who penny pinches his way through life. The point of a sale is to save money on items that were previously beyond people's normal budgets. Perhaps some of the ladies were buying in bulk because EID is around the corner??

Buying a Prada is not the same as buying Next. The design, quality of fabric and 'cut' are what makes the items different.Compare a pair of Prada shoes with some from Aldo's - you'll probably be shocked at how cheap the finishing is.

Kuwait2Beirut, they go for brands because they wont to look different from each other. Places like H & M bring 5000 pairs of the same dress, D & G bring 5. It's about being unique.
