fadibou: I agree with you. It is something akin to what happened when slide film was more or less replaced by print film. Slide film has a narrow latitude, similar to the CCD or CMOS sensors of today's cameras, while the print film has a much wider latitude.
Just as every mom & pop could take great photos with their dinky point & shoot film cameras, similar explosion would probably happen if HDR type sensors start appearing on point & shoot digital cameras.
As you rightly said, it may be a good thing at the end.

Cajetan: Canon's next sensro due this summer covers HDR (that's what they promise) but I feel that less power is giving to the photographer and more to the camera which make the photographer just a clicker or a composer no more.
Maybe its good after all

Hi All,
I found this great blog by accident. Thank you for all your positive comments.
Fadibou, I can assure you that the picture is not a fake. It is just a technique of adding extra dynamic range to your photos.
Dynamic range is currently a challenge for digital sensors. Fuji recently introducted their
Super CCD SR sensor which is actually 2 sensors stuck next to each other. One sensor is designed to capture the highlights, and the other is optimized to capture the shadows.
More details at....
http://www.dcviews.com/press/Fuji-S3-ProX.htm

HDR is simply a software based implemention of the same thing. I agree that the tone mapping can sometimes give painting-like effects. But on the whole, it is a great tool to capture panaromas & architechture.

the idea is pretty basic. shoot the same shot in a variety of exposures.. and then merge them. you can use your Sony cam, you just need Photoshop CS2
