KTM Update

ktm

So after work today I went and met with KTM magazine who are located near my office. I wasn’t nervous or anything just really curious to what was in store for me. I met with 2 guys and we sat down and spoke a bit about their magazine. We also spoke about the digital versus print thing and I told them how I don’t find magazine interesting anymore. After that debate we spoke about me and how I would contribute to their magazine. They recently re-branded and with the re-branding they are also restructuring and they are getting new writers and they want me to write for them.

We spoke about what kind of writing I would do and we brainstormed some subjects I could write about and the result turned out to be very interesting. I can’t say what kind of writing I will do or what the subject is but I can say its like nothing I have written before and I am really excited in doing it. I took a risky direction but its more fun this way (for me and you) and its something completely new to me so don’t expect any food reviews or anything predictable like that.

Finally we spoke about the financial end of the deal which is always an awkward and uncomfortable subject for me. We spoke about what Bazaar had previously offered me and then they asked me how much I wanted and I told them. They agreed and my first article is now due August 15th.

Thats it basically, it should be fun.

You know whats really funny about KTM? The logo Reminds me soooo much of KLM (Royal Duch Airlines) LOL! go to google.com search images - KLM Logo, and check out the 1st logo on the left…It’s even the same colour.

they both use different type faces and KLM is not connected while KTM is. Only thing thats the same is the fact they both have the letters K and M.

  14. 14. alolo | July 20th, 2006 at 2:47 pm

Mark - I know they have different typefaces, but you gotta admit that the overal look is VERY similar.

  15. 15. Mark | July 20th, 2006 at 2:55 pm

i dont see it but maybe because i am a designer and the difference between the two to me is night and day

    Good for you, Mark!
Give us a feeler for the kinds of articles you hope to write for KTM ( no distant cousin of the ATM’s,I hope).
We should, especially, be grateful if you can do a piece on some of the following topics that can be of some interest to most of us:
    Marital Rape
The concept of Patenting of Fatwas
Is rape possible by a woman?
Drugs related crime in Kuwait - the complete picture
    Religious tolerance in Kuwait
    On alternative life-styles etc.
    Bonne Chance!

Mark - I am a Graphic Designer, and i care a lot about logos being original since they preject a companies image. The problem with our society that companies are too lazy to come up with their own ideas so they copy someone else’s work. I am not blaming KTM, this might have been just a coincidence but whoever did this shouldve done his research 1st. and THAT to me is weak design right there.

And on a final note this logo is not directed to a specific audience. i.e designers only. so a normal person wouldnt have your desginer insight on typography, so they wouldnt notice the subtle differences.

    klm ktm

alolo then you must be one crappy designer if you think the KLM and KTM logo are similar.

According to your train of thought, they should rename KTM to something else or else people will think its KLM.

    Thats fucking stupid.

another thing i noticed about ktm is they change the colour of their baner every month, it was green, then orange now it blue. thats weird i thought. there’s a motorbike brand called ktm by the way. KLM is as similar to KTM as BBC is to MBC

I’m an avid reader of english mags in Kuwait (whatever few there are) and mark…if you can contribute your articles towards KTM, that would be fanfuckintastic. On the matter of KLM and KTM logos resembling each other, im with you a 100%. The difference is night and day.

  21. 21. Pearls | July 22nd, 2006 at 12:58 pm

I really can’t wait to read your article. I hope things go well for you.

  22. 22. alolo | July 22nd, 2006 at 3:55 pm

Mark - I am very offended by what you said. I didn’t criticize or offend you so theres no reason to call me a crappy designer just coz i dont agree with you! lets just agree to disagree.

  23. 23. Mark | July 22nd, 2006 at 4:10 pm

I am sorry if you found my comment offensive but as a designer you should easily be able to tell that there is absolutely no similarities between the KLM and KTM logos.

If you could tell me one thing thats the same, just one (the letters K and M dont count and the color also doesnt count) then I will take back what I said. Sound fair?

I think u’re taking this whole KTM-KLM connection wayyyy too seriously. I mean, attacking readers of your blog just for posting thier innocent ideas/comments is rude and uncalled for. I always fly KLM and when I saw the KTM logo i thought of KLM airlines and KTM bikes right away. Seriously, they could’ve been much more original instead of just copying other logos out there. I’ve been in the field for a few years and I’ve seen this kind of pure copying by many companies in Kuwait unfortunately. I’m used to reading ur blog a lot, Mark, but i’ve never posted anything before. I hope u can accept my post and my ideas and not attack them just because u don’t share the same views (or that u’re going to work with KTM)… Acceptance of other people’s comments and an open mind are the true signs of a designer and an artist

  25. 25. Mark | July 22nd, 2006 at 5:21 pm

Signor have you seen the KTM bike logo?

here it is incase you havent, now please tell me again whats similar?

You think just because KLM and KTM have nearly the same letters that makes KTMs logo a copy. Then you mention that there is a bike company with the same name KTM but whos logo is also very different and you accuse them of copying. I hope you continue to never post a comment on my blog again because if its anything like your narrow minded response above we are all better off without you.

regardless, i like the changes theyve made, and if theyve approached mark, im think theyre going in the right direction to imporve the quality of their content. looking forward to it, although i wonder wh ythey had tarek al duaj on their front page in the june issue, who the hell is tarek anyway????

  28. 28. Signor Sasi | July 24th, 2006 at 11:32 pm

I didn’t mean the logo is copied from KTM bikes, it just reminded me of it, it looks like they copied it from KLM airlines. I think u r being close-minded by your attacks on other peoples’ opinions. Speaking of which, u’ve got the kuwaiti “il-rass il-yabiss” thing going for you, so hang in there and I’m sure it’ll bring you one step closer to those 200kd

Thats a shame. I heard that Kuwait was one of the top in the middle east for freedom of press and speach. It makes me wonder how edited the other countries are. Im really curious to read your article though…..what could have been so bad? Maybe if you sanded down all the sharp edges and left the gist it would be printable….still how is any culture supposed to grow and keep up with the rest of the world if its creative youth keep being stifled? Hey at least there is the net. cheers and the clink of juice boxes are heard around the room

“can u possibley OD on weed?” “do you get drunk from female vaginal discharge?” “the effects of LSD on a two year old child” “signor the chutney ferret” some topics i would write about in a magazine
