MUJI CD player in Kuwait

I left Marina Crescent after meeting up with a friend and was on my way home when I decided to pass by Brands for Less. I hadn’t been there in ages and since Nat was at the gym I could kill a bit of time there checking out what they had. I got lucky!

While browsing through all their electronics section I noticed something, the MUJI CD player! Its a beautifully designed CD player designed by the famous Japanese designer Naoto Fukasawa back in 1999. It has built in speakers and just two buttons on the top, very minimalistic. I had originally seen it at a MUJI store in Munich and although I found it beautiful, at nearly $200 it was too expensive for me to justify the purchase. So here out of the blue I was at Brands for Less standing in front of an item that no one around me had a clue what it was. I looked at the price and it was just KD7.850!

So I picked up the box and headed to the cashier. Before I paid the employee asked me if I wanted to try it out to make sure it works. He plugged it in and we put a CD but nothing happened. After a few minutes we declared it dead until I remembered that the CD player design was influenced by a kitchen fan and to turn on a kitchen fan you tug on the cable underneath which I did and the player came to life. I then decided to see if I could get the price reduced to KD5 because the package was ripped but I only managed to get the price dropped down to KD6. Basically, I bought a $180 MUJI CD player for just $20! I am going to drill it into my kitchen wall and use it to listen to Radiohead while I bake.

For those of you who were interested in the “Ethernet over Power” adapters I had posted about previously. They had some more in stock and they’re still selling a box that comes with 3 adapters for KD13.700.

power of ethernet was a break-thru for many people, but i just dont think it got enough publicity and marketing value. it would have been very helpful and convenient for many.

and i think the MUJI player looks pretty cool actually and the fan-like idea is great.

i use the power over ethernet at home. it allows me to get ethernet to parts of the room where i dont want to run a wire or where a device doesn’t have wifi. for example i run power over to ethernet over to my dreambox and also to my audrey in the kitchen. its practical and at kd13 for 3 units thats a good deal.

I am sure, I was just highlighting the fact that link has been going around the web for a week now on how to build your own “cheaper version” of the MUJI CD player.

I paid full price a few years ago now…

Mark, tug on the cable carefully – once it’s loose it stops working. You’d think they would make it more sturdy since this is the ‘on’ button – but I guess it’s more design than function. Sound quality is lovely though.

    Well Mark
I went to Brands for less when youposted about the store ages ago looking for the ethernet through the power sockets and couldnt find them cause they were sold out, and I found the muji wall player, they had 2:
I bought the sealed one in a heartbeat
and left the one with the box a bit torn
guess your the one who knew what he was picking up
I have mine in the guest bedroom with a small selection of lounge cds for our house guests
    Enjoy

ah thats pretty cool. Yeah i picked up the torn box one :)
If you still want the power over ethernet when I posted this there were 3 available, not sure if they are still there but you could check.
