I think we need to cut Naif Al-Mutawa a little bit of slack here. Even if you don't read the comic book we all need to give him some "Todd McFarlane" credit. Spawn went from being a brand new IP to becoming a best-selling comic book, toy line, animated series, and live-action feature film in less than 5 years. Whether or not you like Spawn, you have to give McFarlane credit for getting all of that done. I think Naif Al-Mutawa deserves the same amount of credit too. By the way, why hasn't Naif Al-Mutawa branched out into creating action figures? That would seem to be a logical step.

Hi Dr. Nav,
THE 99 Village theme park opens everyday at 4 pm till midnight. There is no entrance fee, you need to pay for the rides as and when you get on them.
Doha Entertainment City is an entertainment park while THE 99 Village is a theme park designed on THE 99 concept. You get to feel the characters in THE 99 story. There are huge posters, flags, muppies depicting THE 99 characters which you and your children will enjoy. You can call THE 99 Village Park Manager on 24574862 or 24574639 for more details. Enjoy your visit to THE 99 Village theme park.

Hmm, interesting. However, regardless of the sequence of events here (comic, park, animation), you're going too fast.
As important as intellectual property is the brand/ concept's ability to last. Yes, spideman and scooby doo were successful, but only because they've been there for as long as I could remember before being transformed into cash cows. Take The Watchmen for example, a ten comic book series between since 1985, and in 2008, achieved only $139 mn revenues when their budget was $120 mn. Spiderman's first movie alone generated $830 with a lower budget.

Hi Isaac. Thank you. And great question.

It is not Teshkeel that has been aggressive, it is partners who stepped up, believed in what we were doing and took the risk. For example, the Theme Parks are financed by one of our first round investors. They stepped up and believed very strongly in the premise. But on a business note form my end, I raised money for THE 99 twice over the last 6 years. Raising money for an Intellectual Property in the MENA region has been like splitting hairs. People like to touch and feel what they invest in which is only more poignant in an economic downturn. So the answers to your questions are many. But the only thing consistent in intellectual property licensing is that all roads lead to Rome. Pirates of the Caribean was a theme park ride before it became a comic and movie. Spiderman was a comic before it became a movie. Scooby Doo was a cartoon before it became a movie and comic series. And THE 99 was a comic that became a them park right before its animation series was release globally (end of 2009 Inshallah.)

Best
Naif

Naif, I have no idea why you (Teshkeel) are taking such an aggressive approach towards your branding and strategy. How long has it been since you launched the first comic?

Don't you think you should wait a while, until the comics are more popular and have reached various age segments and countries until you transform the idea into something more profitable?

By case study, you'll find that Archie comics, Disney cartoons, among others have all waited until their ideas were absorbed by the targeted market when they started producing action figures, stationary, movies, and theme parks.

You want to transform your comics concept into something else only when your audience is attached to it. It's too early, for launching a theme park, and like the feedback you've already recieved; people are going to be indifferent.

Congrats on your opening anyway.

Our long terms plan is to be able to do exactly what you are suggesting. But investing in a high tech park with visas being about as easy (and as comfortable) as a colonoscopy in this country mean that the market will be extremely limited and a loss proposition to anyone attempting such an endeavour.

Seriously people here should learn to be more optimistic, when no new projects are made people whine and when they are made they still whine and complain.

Jahra lately seems to be the area with the most developments, Al Salayl Resort and Mall. Now this amusement park, and a bunch of other projects.

Wallah good for them, that place will be filled with the people living in Jahra.

Some suggestions would be, so seriously fill up that park with rides, hopefully new high tech rides not the boring rides in every single park in Kuwait. Comon get some ideas from Universal or something, I know its a costly project, but invest in new rides and people will travel the distance to check them out.
