United Cable Company
Yesterday while chatting with Tivo Guy over lunch about my DSL options, he mentioned UCC. I was like UCC? Never heard of them. Turns out UCC is Gulfnet which is Kuwait.net. I thought they had died a few years but turns out they are still alive. So later on in the evening I got to Shownet to cancel my account (finally got it over with) and the guy there was tells me that they have a new DSL only service in collaboration with.. UCC. Interesting how when you hear about something for the first time and then suddenly hear it again. Turns out Shownet is an official GulfNet DSL distributer and they are packaging showtime packages with Gulfnets DSL offerings. I ofcourse refused to have anything to do with Shownet anymore and said no thank you. So UCC is United Cable Company which is GulfNet which is Kuwait.net.

When you follow the chain up to the top, you find the Kuwait Projects Group (KIPCO at http://www.kipcogp.com) which holds almost 100 companies, primarily in Kuwait). Showtime is only one of their many Telecom companies. They also have a bunch of Financial Institutions (Burgan Bank, ++), Mobile Companies (Wataniya, +), Real Estate (United ++), Consulting (Pulsar, Hunter, +) and Industrial (Hempel, Saudi Dairy, Kw Chemical Manuf. Co., ++).
KIPCO Group represents a 10 Billion Dollar operation!
We have personally used Showtime for a couple of years and had a few glitches. They apparently have programming issues with many of their decoders and have been trying, with occasional success, to get the whole thing working properly. We went through a bunch of decoders and finally changed to a different model. Still the occasional problem but it is MUCH better. They also goofed on our billing a few times. We have visited their office off Sixth Ring Road dozens of time and they have been courteous and tried their best to help. I am not totally satisfied but they do offer a nice combination of programming to fill the otherwise quiet evenings (and HOT summer days).
Cautionary note: We know of several people who have had their credit cards hit by tons of bogus charges. The common factor is that they were all used to pay for Showtime in Kuwait. I suspect that someone at Showtime tapped into their client records and sent the list out to the far east for handling. We knew, going in, that Showtime have had problems shutting off their automated billing so we selected a Credit Card that has only one charge on it (Showtime). The Card company alerted us to bogus activity and handled it (never even showed up on our bill).
Be careful out there, folks.
