Zain

Zain

I just tried going to www.mtc-vodafone.com to recharge Nat’s mobile when I noticed the site was down. So I decided to check www.zain.com and noticed the site is now online. I can’t seem to find the eeZee recharge link though… [Link]

Update: OK I think http://kw.zain.com/ is where the eeZee recharge link and the full website will be located. I think its currently down because they are uploading the new updated site during the middle of the night so that its fully functioning by morning time. Its 1:35AM at the moment.

Update 2:
http://kw.zain.com/ is now also online.

“A wonderful world” ???? this is what they chose? oh man hahahahaha

so is their new theme going to be a midi ripoff of “a wonderful world” by Louis Armstrong?

I don’t like it at all. The brand name “Zain” is tacky and it says nothig about the company. Zain in Kuwaiti means “OK” or “just fine”. What kind of corporate identity are they conveying here? We are OK? The name is suitable for an Indian shop in Mubarakia selling cheap perfumes and not a telecom company.

The colors and the logo are also horrible. It looks like a cover of a lounge music CD from the late nineties!

Who the hell is responsible for this branding fiasco and how much did MTC pay them?

You want to put your various multinational operations under one umbrella? Call all of them MTC and khalas. Some of the greatest companies in the world have abbreviations as their corporate id: GE, IBM, BMW, B&o, CBS, BBC, CNN and on and on…

Zain? Give me a break! Indian movie ;)

Zain has numerous meanings and the ones that were put previously by Sal were the Kuwaiti slang meaning of Zain..

if we look at the correct arabic meaning it is Zukhruf
    Hassan
    Tabarruj
    tazayan

as for the translation it is
    to adorn
    ornament
    embelish
    garnish
    grace
    beautiful
    handsome
    gracefull
    pretty
    goodlooking
    nice
    good
    fine
    gem

which are all very positive. plus there was alot of money and research put into it. in the newspapers it was written that research was done on 300+ names before choosing a brand name to make sure that the word had no negative or derogatory meaning to it plus it was essential that it could be pronounced in every language in the world.

Bearing in mind that the intial list had arabic and latin words in it but the short list only had arabic names. plus having an arabic name maintains the identity of which Zain spurred.

    Nina,

Granted. Let’s assume they mean the classical term which means “good looking” or “nice”. What’s that got to do with a telecommunications company? If it were a makeup store, I understand, but, a mobile company? I see absolutely no connection. I really question their research. I think it was either amateurish research or no research at all. It looks like they hired Borat as a consultant (We are good company, we are nice! Yes?) or maybe someone in management named the company after their daughter. Who knows?

Incidently, a second look at the logo reminds me of some of Bazar magazine’s stolen artwork. Mark, maybe you should check it out ;)

I live in Nigeria and use the Celtel service here. Celtel is what “Zain-to-be” is called here and in other African countries where they provide service. Personally, and as a professional in the Advertising/Branding field, I am LOVING this new MTC identity change. The logo looks unusual yet has a subtle appeal for a telecoms company. However it looks like one that will eventually catch on and grow to become very strong. The name also Has a unique and trendy touch, mainly because it’s very rare to find a brand name that starts with a “Z”. The discovery of this name is a unique and distinct find. Lets all just open our minds and see how it goes. Thanks.

And lets not forget that some of the worlds greatest brands today first suffered alot of misunderstandings and criticisms.
