Hello MacBook

My MacBook

My MacBook finally got delivered today. It got held in customs yesterday but luckily I didn’t have to pay anything just the clearance fee’s which totaled to KD16 and this included the KD5 Aramex charge to clear the packages themselves. So far I am really loving it, it just looks amazing, while taking the picture above no matter what angle I tried to shoot it from the MacBook looked great. Now I will spend the next few days manually transferring files from my old MacBook onto the new and then will put the old one up for sale.

    congrats,
if u got a firewire, try Applications>>Utilities>>Migration Assistant

of use TimeMachine on the old one and Restore from TimeMachine on the new one!

Life is much easier than MANUALLY TRANSFER!

Blasha: I enjoy transffering my stuff manually, helps me trash all the junk i dont need. Time Machine I just use it in case of emergency but I never restore from it.

Coool so what was the total you spent on it if you don’t mind asking :) Including Aramex Shipping Costs.

  6. 6. Mark | November 3rd, 2008 at 10:50 pm

KD452 for the MacBook. (I got the top end model, used education discount which is like $100 discount and the KD452 also includes quick 3 day shipping and tax).
KD36 for Aramex (shipping plus customs clearance)

That’s cool.. Do you think it’s worth it to get the High End with 4GB RAM and 320GB HDD?

  8. 8. Cr8ivia | November 3rd, 2008 at 10:55 pm

i got mine 2 weeks ago or more
    its great
    i love everything about it
i wonder how ppl say the white and black last generation looks better ! no !

  9. 9. Mark | November 3rd, 2008 at 10:58 pm

Jacqui: Its worth upgrading the RAM since its only $150, it costs $130 elsewhere. I regret not doing that. HD depends, my MacBook usually doesn’t hold anything, its just for web browsing, blogging and minor work so it depends on your needs. But definitly go for the top end MacBook since its 2.4ghz over the standard 2.0 and backlit keyboard :)

Cool I guess I should do that since I’m on a 1.6Ghz Macbook Air with 80GB that’s running out all the time hehe :s And it’s such a steal really!

I would love to read a review mark. I heard the screen sucks!
    Review it please thanks!

  22. 22. Magnus | November 4th, 2008 at 6:04 am

@blasha: New MacBooks don’t have FireWire. Transfer with Time Machine backup to USB HDD.

@holla: I doubt there’ll be a black version, Apple has now standardized the look to this aluminum and glass style.

Congrats Mark, hope you enjoy it. I love my new MacBook, we’ve been using the 2.4/4/128SSD version.

  23. 23. Magnus | November 4th, 2008 at 6:08 am

@blasha: Sorry, just noticed you mentioned Time Machine.

@holla: Runs Windows XP very well in Fusion for me.

I’ve been trying “mobileme” from Apple for the last few weeks, its great. Its keeping my macbook air, mac mini, and iphone all synchronized on continues bases, once I add a new contact to my iphone or even a bookmark, it will be added to all devices automatically.

for a new device, just logon to your mobileme and all your preferences, data, shortcuts… will be added automatically.

  34. 34. Ms.Baker | November 4th, 2008 at 1:56 pm

Mark I just bought the new Macbook Pro, and cannot wait for it (it’s being cleared in customs for me by Aramex, and I’m hoping it will be done and in my hands by tomorrow). It’s a good sign you didnt have to pay duty, hope I do not either. Mabrook!

  35. 35. kwt23 | November 4th, 2008 at 5:07 pm

I don’t know how you can take living with these machines! I have an older version of the macbook and my download speeds are very limited because there is no decent torrent client program. Mark, what do u use for ur downloads? This issue is killing me!

  36. 36. Mark | November 4th, 2008 at 5:14 pm

I use transmission and there are a ton more torrent clients. I havent heard of anyone having problems downloading torrents on a mac, i would check your internet connection instead.

  37. 37. Bow n Arrow | November 4th, 2008 at 7:00 pm

Congrats Mark.. I’m ordering my Pro right now :p

kwt23, try Vuze/Azureus. The latest version works brilliantly with Leopard as well as Tiger. :)

  38. 38. twaif | November 4th, 2008 at 10:35 pm

is the speaker loud or same as the old macbook?

  39. 39. mishref | November 4th, 2008 at 11:08 pm

my stupid black book battery is dead for the second time in a year. i hope apple get’s things right now, esp. with new products i tend to watch and see for few months before stepping a head and get myself one of their gadgets

  40. 40. kwt23 | November 5th, 2008 at 1:57 am

Mark, I use transmission too. My friend has an HP running vista. We both tried downloading the same torrent exactly for more than one torrent and it always downloads at high speeds. I don’t think it’s with the connection. I googled this and found out that indeed it is a problem with macs (that the torrent clients don’t reach maximum speeds that the connection can handle). That’s disappointing :(

  41. 41. kwt23 | November 5th, 2008 at 1:58 am

“….it always downloads at higher speeds on his computer than on mine…” ***

  42. 42. BoBader | November 5th, 2008 at 3:43 am

    kwt23:

Try Azureus or Vuze (they are the same). Most torrent programs require that you achieve certain upload to download ratio to get higher speeds. Furthermore, check your torrent program setting and make sure they are correct. This is the first time I’ve heard about such thing as Macs have problems with torrent download speeds.

  44. 44. orgthingy | November 5th, 2008 at 4:41 pm

ps. why would you want windows partition in an apple machine? thats “ugly” :S the whole point is to _completely use one of them_ :P

  45. 45. Dave | November 5th, 2008 at 5:19 pm

    @orgthingy

Why have a Windows partition? To play games, run Windows only applications. You know – the very obvious reasons.

  46. 46. Dhari | November 5th, 2008 at 5:37 pm

I’ve got my new macbook for about a week now. Love it …
    2 issues:
    - Can’t empty the trash (it makes that emptying sound after I ask it to empty the trash, but nothing happens)
    - A dead pixel – a blue dot appears on the screen. not really noticable, but bothers me
Any suggestions? (got my laptop from apple.com)

  47. 47. Dave | November 5th, 2008 at 6:19 pm

    @ Dhari

Try disk repair for the bin.
As for the pixel, try massaging the area – it sometimes works – or running a program that turns it on and off rapidly. If that doesn’t work, you’ll have to live with it – Apple won’t exchange for 1 pixel unless you are incredibly lucky.

hey mark.. why didn’t you use ‘you shop, we ship’?? is there something wrong with their service compared to aramex?? ..

  51. 51. moe | November 8th, 2008 at 12:22 pm

i was planning on getting a netbook from the states,, but since you didn’t use i guessed there is something wrong with their service.
