Home Network Meltdown

My home network is just a total mess. Everything could be working perfectly and then suddenly in a blink of an eye the whole network would crawl to a halt and crash. Just like that for no reason. I just spent the afternoon shifting from a wireless network to a wired one and what a headache that was. The hardest part was trying to find a 22 meter long black ethernet cable. I looked all over Hawalli walking from shop to shop and only found one place that had a black 20 meter long one and it was his last piece. Also picked up two Linksys 8-port switches and everything seems to be working fine for now.

The 20 meter cable cost me KD3 while the Linksys 8-port switches cost me KD6.750 each.

forget 20 meter ethernet cables laying around your house; you should consider getting powerline ethernet. just make sure you order 220v thus get it from amazon uk

I tried that, also wasn’t very reliable. I still use it though for one location in the house where there is no wifi or ethernet.

Well, on the bright side your ethernet cabling will probably last for many many years to come.

I made the switch from wireless to wired and I never looked back.

Wired = Allot more secure (no sniffing), faster, and no interference

There is also the option to switch to wireless N. For me the only option with 6 normal wireless networks in the building. In 5 Ghz you have plenty more space and more speed. Its (here) stable.

you should have gone in for 1000mbps switches..

i thought about it but currently have no use for it since AppleTV is 10/100, xbox, ps3 etc.. all 10/100. Only things 1gigabit are my macbooks and powermac server but they connect to each other wirelessly. Maybe will get 1gigabit in the future.

I’d like to know how you route the cables around the house. I’m having a tough time hiding it under carpets and running it along the wall skirting.

And its made from metal not plastic. Found Dlink plastic for KD5.5

    mathai , are you back?

  11. Rayboy says:

mark.. its not about individual items, its a combination of all of them.. imagine the amount of traffic.. from all these devices into a centralised location.

  12. Mark says:

Yeah I see what you mean. Well I didn’t pay much for these 8ports so I can always get the 1gigabit once I have everything set up and working right.

    Ray I’m back ! :)

I seen these flat ethernet cables (black color) at Eureka a few months ago. I think they are great for routing around the house. They conceal well under carpets etc.

  15. Rayboy says:

flat cables?… nice.. need to check it out.

  16. Mathai says:

Sounds perfect ! I didnt know those were available at Eureka. We usually get flat network management port cables from the server vendors.
    Thanks lensman :)
