My iPhone charger exploded!

I was surfing the web on my MacBook in bed when suddenly I heard a loud *POP* sound and I started smelling something strange. So I turn on the lights and realized it was my iPhone charger! I was charging my iPhone 3GS with my 2G iPhone’s power adapter like I did last night except tonight the thing exploded. Luckily nothing caught on fire but this is seriously messed up. My iPhone 3GS is fine and is currently being charged on my PowerMac but I am still pissed.

Damn…why weren’t you using the charger that came with the 3gs though Mark?

  2. 2. BoBader | July 28th, 2009 at 2:06 am

Probably a small power surge. I had few US power adapters stop working in Kuwait but non actually exploded. An electrician told me to buy a power regulator and never attach the adapter directly to the outlet. It is good thing that your iPhone didn’t get damage. Why you are not using the charger that came with your 3GS?

Looks like somebody got ound, brotha. [/Desmond]

  4. 4. Mark | July 28th, 2009 at 2:07 am

Didn’t see a reason to use the new adapter. My iphone power adapter was already conveniently plugged in next to my bed so I continued using it.

I see, I was always cautious when it came to apple’s power adaptors for the Ipods and iphones. Well atleast the 3GS is safe, be glad its battery didn’t explode or anything.

Damn! And I was gonna ask if it’s ok to use my iPod charger for it. Guess that answers my qst

whoa! 3 fire incidents in less than a week, what’s next Mark? :)

  8. 8. kha | July 28th, 2009 at 6:59 am

that is very very weird. Apple’s chargers have always been set to accept universal voltages & so all u needed to do is change the head & it should work. I dunno how this could happen

  9. 9. shopa | July 28th, 2009 at 7:26 am

did u report it? you should! They would send you a new one!

  12. 12. Mark | July 28th, 2009 at 9:16 am

Mark- I’m still using my old iPhone charger on my 3Gs and nothing happened. It’s the same charger.

  15. 15. HeartBeat | July 28th, 2009 at 9:28 am

I don’t think it has anything to do with the 3gs!

I think something went wrong with the charger and probably that would have happened even if you were charging the 2g iphone that night!

just a coincident! Why now? cause you have been lucky fire guy !! :P

  16. 16. Dratsab | July 28th, 2009 at 9:33 am

mmmm sounds funny but yeah voltage difference might have caused this problem… and your 3GS is from australia …

and your 2G is from US I assume… anyways

buying a new one would be faster, reporting it makes sense but no replacements :)

    @Shopa reporting it ?? its a 2G charger :)

  17. 17. Mark | July 28th, 2009 at 9:36 am

Dratsab: I am definitely reporting it. It doesn’t matter if its a 2G charger this shouldn’t happen. All Apple adapters work with everything. Same adapter works for the iphone and all the ipods. If its not supposed to be used with the new 3GS there would be a big yellow card in the box warning not to use it with any other adapter. The adapter is just a USB charger so its universal.

I ordered 2 iphone/ipod power adapters from Amazon yesterday, found them for 3.5$. But i need something now so called every brand of Digits and iCity and no one has any power adapter. Manshar branch of iCity did have a power adapter that came in a bigger package but costs KD25!

  28. 28. kadavul | July 28th, 2009 at 1:20 pm

Check with Alghanim. I bought a power adapter for little over KD. 7/-. Of course that was for iPod. I guess you can use for iPhone too.

  29. 29. Mark | July 28th, 2009 at 2:21 pm

I just got one with multi adapters for KD4.5 from alghanim.

Don’t you use the supplied adapter which you got with the iphone 3gs.

  40. 40. rock-a-bye | July 29th, 2009 at 3:14 pm

So I just discovered people are buying their iphones off me and re-selling them on Mark’s forum. I will have you know, I will not be liable for any damage or warranty issues if you do decide to buy these phones.

Why would you buy an iphone for 290kd when I’m selling them for 275kd? Seriously, you guys cant wait 4 days?

  41. 41. Jens | July 29th, 2009 at 11:54 pm

If I’m not wrong there was a recall for this chargers that came with the Iphone 2G. So it might be your mistake.

  42. 42. Mark | July 29th, 2009 at 11:55 pm

Nope, the recall was for the 3G iPhones and it wasn’t because of a fire hazard but because of a electrical shock hazard.

  43. 43. doesn't0matter | August 1st, 2009 at 3:14 pm

Thanks god it’s not from the 2G port .. cuz I charge my 3G iphone with a worse charger than urs “ipod charger” .. if u need a new charger I’ve got an extra one ;P

OMG the same thing happen with my macbook and its only like 6 months old, when i called al ghanim about my warranty they were total jerks and refused to fix my computer or my charger for like 3 days, then they wanted me to pay like 150kd. i suggest before buying anything you call and fight with them until they do it for free…it worked for me, its not fair that you should have to buy a new ANYTHING!!!

  46. 47. Milan | October 20th, 2009 at 6:07 pm

Exact same thing happens to me last month.

Worst thing provider refused to change it, I’m very upset.
