My MacBook hard drive

macbook drive defect

Recently it came to my attention that my MacBook hard drive (a 60GB Seagate) contains a fatal defect. Its not only me, a lot of other MacBook owners also have the same defect so I decided not to risk it failing on me and went to Bin Khaldoun street to get a new drive.

I wanted to upgrade my drive to a 7200rpm and the only place I found that carried them was Soft Island (tel 2633666). I got a Seagate 100GB 7200 RPM for KD25 which is pretty cheap (costs KD30 on newegg). Here are other prices I found keep in mind these are 2.5inch laptop drives.

Western Digital 250GB 5400 RPM: KD54
Hitatchi 160GB 5400 RPM: KD30
Samsung 120GB 5400 RPM: KD27
Seagate 100GB 7200 RPM: KD25
Seagate 100GB 5400 RPM: KD20

If you have a MacBook you need to check and see if your drive is defected or not by going to “About this Mac” from the menu, then click on “More info…” and select “Serial-ATA”. If it says Revision 7.0.1 your drive has the defect. [More info]

So out of curiousity, how would you transfer all of your data onto the new drive? Is their a way to basically copy-paste your entire hard-drive and transfer all the info intact? Coz I’ve been thinking about replacing my 11-month-old HP laptop’s HD with a bigger one, but I don’t want to go through the hassle of re-installing everything blah blah blah

Well on the Mac there is but I dont know how it on Windows desktops. It is a hassle to reinstall everything but at least everything is nice and fresh

my macbook just died on me! n its just a year old! at the bigening i had a hard time turning it on! i tried reseting the PM and the PRAM nothing helped n then it just wont start at all! i took it to digits (Mac&more previously) after nearly a week of holding it there they decided its the logic board (motherboard) n they asked for 300KD!! when a brand new macbook with double the ram n the hard disk costs 380KD online!!

the defect is in the hard drive, the logic board is a completely different story.

  11. Its a bit late to ask now but I hope you read it. What method did you use to transfer data from your old drive to new one when upgrading? Did you use the good old DVD burn solution?

This is still going on, had I known – I would have backed up all my wife’s pictures. They are replacing it for free but refuse to retrieve the data.
