Simple mistake given the misleading use of vernacular; however, amps are used to drive higher powered 'phones like the unbelievably bassy AHD 7000's from Denon. It is more often used for people who want to drive headphones which require more power. It is not so much amp-ing the volume, but the impedance of the signal.
