these underaged guys my friend knows get their alcohol by bringing in those recyclable bags that are cloth, you know the ones you use dont have to waste more plastic. he goes and puts his alcohol in the bag then has his friend scan some stuff and pay and put it in the bag, they dont even know the alcohol is in there. Preety slick but i would never have the balls to do it

get all the expensive meat you can, weight them on the scale and put them through as “red onions” wonderfull savings and the machine and staff are none the wiser.

actually i get away with roughly £20.00 of food every couple days, bags of chicken at £12.00, coffee, protein powder priced at £50.00!! in-fact i have had 4 of those so theres an instant saving of £200.00!!
all i do is keep the 2 most expensive things to the end, and as i pick them up i hit the pay button, it automatically adds up all the price and then as it does that i pass the items over the screen and into the bag then straight into my trolley!! i been doing it for 2 years now, i also swap the price labels round on the clothes and scan them all!! im getting coats just now, usually priced at £60.00 for the price of a tesco fleece!

There are several ways to cheat self checkouts and the knowlege is getting passed around the internet. Anyone with above average intelligance will spot the loop holes immediately.
Cameras and weight checks are the only built in security.

I don’t knwo what sort of grocery stores you use, but there’s always something someone is willing to steal. Razors are the top item for shoplifting due to their small size and high price. What about alcohol? It’s not just homeless and kids that steal. There’s a credit crunch on at the moment and people will steal anything. Bottle of whisky at £20, easy to steal if you really want to. Grocery stores don’t just sell small priced items you know.

These self checkout machines are a usability nightmare,
People are required to get assistant too many times during the process.
It can work fine when you have only few items with barcodes but when you have alcohol or loose vegs you better not use them.

strain gauges check for any strain which translates to wieght of the product you scanned which is in the systems database.

the items you scan have a certain weight registered within the database, so the bagging area/tray would be expecting the weight you just scanned. If there’s extra weight it would go “…Remove these items before continuing”. And even if you remove the items you already scanned it would go “Items removed from bagging area, please return items to continue”…

I lived with these machines for 2 years now, haha
I stopped going to an actual employees on cashiers!

I used the self-checkout long time ago in the states back in late 1990s and it really is convenient but not a new concept :-)
