The PS3 is larger in size and volume than the Xbox 360. Sony's original PS3 size has been enlarged because they couldn't fit everything in the size they had planned. Of course these numbers are not perfect since each system is not a plain box object. But the 360 is definately the closest to a true box, so it's volume is most accurate, and the PS3 is probably the most curved and so it's calculation is the most inaccurate and takes up even less volume. But you get the idea. Sure the PS3 is slightly longer (or taller if stood vertically) than the xbox360, but only by less than half an inch. And by volume, PS3 is smaller than either the xbox or xbox360. Personally, I wish they would have made the PS3 the standard 17.25 inch AV width and ultra thin with an LCD display, so that it would fit nicely into my AV rack. Then it would make a nice looking BluRay player as well. :) I am guessing they made the top rounded to discourage putting stuff on top of it.
