Just to add my data point (and link to some cool videos), I grew up in France in the early 80's and they had better cartoons :-). I only recognized one (Inspector Gadget) from Mark's original link. The Arabic intros on the alsaher.com link had more of those I remember including:

- Capitaine Flam (with the "F" belt buckle)
- Tom Sawyer (one of my favorites)
- Candy (the blond girl next to Tom Sawyer)
- Grendizer (called Goldorak in French)

Here are the French intros for the other shows I loved to watch, starting with two from my all-time favorite:

- Albator 79 and 84 (Captain Harlock in English, a melancholic space pirate Anime with the coolest ship ever)

- Ulysse 31 (a Franco-Japanese co-production with great stories based on the Odyssey, but the music and animation wasn't as good)

- Remi Sans Famille (a French Tom Sawyer)

- Mysterieuses cités d'or ("Cities of Gold" Inca theme, one of my favorite show songs)

- Il etait une fois l'homme (French animation is not as cool as the Japanese anime, but the evolution of man sequence is rather cool)

- Goldorak (Grendizer French theme for completeness - not my favorite show, but a cool intro)

- San Ku Kai (really bad live-action knock off of Star Wars themes, but unforgettable)

While everyone prefers what they grew up with, I have to say the French and Arabic intros still seem more compelling than the English shows. The intro music is more elaborate and catchy, and the stories seem more involved (especially the historical genre such as Tom Sawyer and Sans Famille). They seem less cartoonish and more interesting, even to kids. It's similar to the comparison between US comic books and European "graphic novels."

Coincidentally, I just posted about watching TV as a child.

My favourite favourite cartoon in 1987 was bonic six too!!! i remember looking all over the globe for what happened to them and for some video tapes but i couldnt find any. I remember also that kentucky fried chicken had happy meals with bionic six toys handed out as a gift, i got bunjy (Karate bionic) o still have it till this day. Then i found them being sold in the little toy store next to 3alamiya pizza place in salmiya, now the place is a chocolate store i guess... I bought Meg (bionic girl?) but by the time i decided to go back for more it was already 1990 o the invasion took place. I still have bunjy & Meg and now i will go and look at them :) If you know a place where i can find their videos please let me know... also i want to see that episode with the pyramids ... the mother sees something in a pyramid... and the one with bunjy going to japan upon his fathers' ghost orders... I want to watch them now :~(
