Stray Injured Dog

There’s a stray Injured dog that lives near my work place. I used to see him before with other stray dogs and he looked fine. But this week I saw him again and it seemed like he’d either been hit by a car or some kids got a hold of him and tortured the hell out of him. His leg was busted, his tail looked like it had been cut off and he had a limp.

I called up Animal Friends yesterday and they told me they usually don’t go around picking up stray dogs but they would do an exception since the dog is hurt. So they told me to see if the dog is approachable. And so i did and the dog got scared and limped away, 3 trials later and he was still running away. So i called them back and they told me they couldn’t do much about it. I didn’t even try contacting PAWs since from my previous experience with them I’m sure I would have gotten the same reaction if any reaction at all.

Now the problem is that the poor dog lives in a sandy area located 50 meters away from where I work and I have to watch him suffer everyday from my window. I think it’s really sad that neither PAWs nor Animal Friends would bother doing much about it unless the dog gets delivered to their doorstep. I Put him some water and dry food today where he usually sleeps and I’m really feeling helpless about what else i could do. That poor dog is going to die unless someone decides to do something about it.

Any kind of help or insight is appreciated.. I will try to take a picture of the dog before I leave work today and post it here.

Update: AFL passed by awhile ago and set up a trap to catch the dog.

When it comes to these things I do everything in my power to help… These poor animals literally leave me in tears when I see them, it’s so sad that there is such a tiny percentage of people in Kuwait that care about these things.. I wish I could more than what I already do to help :(

Nat, am sorry to say that but if there is anything that u could do u will do it all by urself! i had the same experience with a dog! she was a 4 months old puppy hit by a car!, resulting in a broken pelvis, a broken leg, a broken rib and a 15 stitches cut! she was just laying down to die! i knew that PAWS nor AFL would take her coz she needed a lot of medical care which would be costly! and the chances of surviving is pretty slim! i took her by myself to IVH the did a great job with her but there was a major problem that she couldnt walk for a long time! she needed a lot of time to heal! which was a main reason for me not to be able to put her with my boxer coz shes gonna be too excited n break her hip again!!
i kept her in IVH for a bit over a month payed her medications n her boarding! IVH DOCTORS (not IVH management) were kind too if u know what i mean!
after that she could stand i contacted PAWS which kindly took her n did a good job finding a good home for her! she was adopted 3 times! 2 of the families didnt provide proper care for her case! which in my opinion PAWS did a great job in following that up! after all rehoming is finding the RIGHT PLACE for the pet not just a place!
u can check her on their website she’s my lovely BAMBI! ;>

i wish i was in q8! i wouldnt hesitate a sec to go help u with that poor dog! Nat, i know its sucks! but u r the only one that could help that dog! :/

PAWS call themselves animal welfare ha i have called them many times about animals i have seen abused and left to die from hit and runs and 1, they never pick up and 2, when they do they say well if you could get the animal and take it to the vet thats better! ha what a joke these people are.

that is so sad about the dog, it pains me just to hear it, i wish i could help you out but i am always afraid i will get a bite and i have kids to look after im no use to them if i get rabies :)

    oh im sad now :(

Print out this coupon and take it to the nearest mosque:

“A man walking along a path felt very thirsty. Reaching a well he descended into it, drank his fill and came up. Then he saw a dog with its tongue hanging out, trying to lick up mud to quench its thirst. The man saw that the dog was feeling the same thirst as he had felt so he went down into the well again and filled his shoe with water and gave the dog a drink. God forgave his sins for this action.’ The Prophet was asked: ‘Messenger of God, are we rewarded for kindness towards animals?’ He said, ‘There is a reward for kindness to every living thing.” (Bukhari, Muslim, Tirmidhi and Bayhaqi)

    I know how u feel…everytime i see a stray in this country…my heart skips a beat….mainly because its lk a dead end for them….
We managed to rescue a few…the first one we adopted and sent back home…they second littered 7 pups out of which only 4 survived…a friend managed to ring up sm1 at the AFL who took her n her pups to the shelter..we did go by to see them once….and they were doing prty great….
Its really sad…wish a super loaded local with a big heart would take up the task of setting up a real home for all these strays…

I’m trying to help the dog. But my problem right now is that whenever I try to approach it, I can’t even get 2 or 3 meters close and it runs away. And it goes over and down the sand dunes ( my office is located in a desert like area) and I can’t catch up.. However me and mark are gonna try to go there over the weekend and try to get a hold of it..Hopefully that will work out..
I’m always worried the local kids who live in the area, always running down the streets are gonna end up catching it first..

This is a serious problem … what i hope is to establish Dog Rescue Unit. I saw this show on Animal Plant channel, where they would go with an actual animal ambulance to rescue all kind of dogs … that what i do wish for to happen soon but there is NO WAY!

there is nothing you can do except if you think he is really hurting you can call the nearest police station they can come and put him out of his misery “i.e. put a pullet in his head” sorry but that’s the way it is here.

Bring some food with you, sit down or kneel so that you’re on the dog’s level and try to coax him to you that way. Also try to be as still as possible.

    Good luck.

I am extremely saddened by this story. I know some of the PAWS members and I am going to send your post to them personally Nat.

I usually pick up cats and take them to either IVH or Dr. Andrew in Shuweikh but I am little weary of dogs (love them tho) otherwise I would have picked him/her up. I feel awful and I will try to my best. Can you email me the exact location of where he/she is please.

    Hello Everyone,
First of all I would like to point out that what Monotheist’s idea is the best I have heard so far. Instead of critisizing(Cerebral Assassin) lets try to work this out all together. By printing out and posting this little sheet of paper all over, people will know what theyre doing to these poor animals is cruel and unacceptable. I have started this mini project where I raise money and 100% of that money goes to AFL. Small projects make a big difference, I hope you can all understand how productive working together to help those mistreated animals is and how it can definetly give those animals freedom, peace, and hope.

  22. 22. rampurple | April 10th, 2008 at 10:45 am

oh and if you want to do something about animal cruelty, check out the latest post on my blog… some sick guy starves dogs for art!!!

Hey Lovely.. that would be great. what’s your email?
Rampurple, WTF? I would be more than pleased to go and fucking shoot the guy myself. Or better yet I would tie him to a short leash in the same museum, starve him to death and call it art as well!
Alot of fucking sick people out there, and whats even more sickening is that others walk by without lifting a finger. This is truly horrendous!

  24. 24. Prophet | April 10th, 2008 at 11:54 am

If you can get him to trust you by trying to interact with him (use treats) maybe hell get close enough for you to collar him and take him to a vet (but be cautious because he could be rabid or have the mange or something). If you can’t, you could try to trap him using a trap cage and some bait.
I’m not sure where you could buy trap cages here, but you can find some online. And you have to make sure to check the cage often. If he’s caught and you forget him out in the sun, well, lets just say he’d be better of dying out on the streets. So I only suggest trapping if you have the time and can follow through with it.

If you can’t do either of the above then just keep on supplying food and water. If you want to try to help with pain management you can put some aspirin in his food. Don’t give him aspirin if he looks like he’s still bleeding because aspirin reduces clotting. You can only give him plain aspirin. NOT panadol. And NOT aspirin with caffeine. Just plain aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid). If you choose to give him aspirin: Estimate his weight. Give him 5 mg of aspirin per pound, every 12 hours.

Good luck, I hope everything works out.

  26. 26. John Peaveler | April 10th, 2008 at 12:33 pm

    Dear Aysha,

In response to your email to 248, PAWS, and Animal Friends, I need to clarify a few things.

Firstly, I will personally come and set a trap to capture the dog in question, so please read this with understanding and patience.

The Animal Friends League of Kuwait is first and foremost an open door animal shelter. That means that we run a humane shelter that meets the needs of any and all animals that arrive at our doorstep. That in and of itself is a daunting task. To accomplish the task of caring for the 100+ animals we have at any time, we have four full time kennel hands that live at the shelter and one paid shelter manager. Beyond this, there are three volunteer board members and a small network of volunteers that help with various things ranging from training to fundraising. These numbers of staff are barely adequate to meet the high standards of care that we demand for the animals in our care. Besides, we all have full time jobs. I myself am a company executive, but I am also the Rescue Coordinator and a board member for Animal Friends. That means that I alone am responsible for the rescue of wild dogs. To assist me in this task is my wife Ayeshah, who is also the founder, executive director, and dog behaviorist for Animal Friends. We receive at least 30 calls a week to come and rescue animals. We simply do not have the resources or the time to meet those needs. For that reason, we rely on the kindness of strangers to bring any animal that is safe to approach and capture to one of the local vet clinics. Wild animal responses are limited to animals which are deemed to be a substantial public nuisance, health risk, and injured animals, and those only on a case by case basis. However, we do not advertise ourselves as an animal rescue league. Please bear that in mind before you discredit us publically.

Additionally, I feel it is unfair of you to condemn us before you have given us all of the facts. All that we knew is that you had seen an injured dog near where you work and that is was not approachable. That dog immediately fell into a category of wild dog, injured but mobile enough to move on. Wild dogs and cats have an amazing ability to survive, heal and cope, so unless they want to be captured, we have no choice but to let them roam. We were not made aware that the dog in question was staying near your work place or that his tail had been cut off. These things make the rescue of this dog much more possible and necessary.

Finally, I will be candid about the way you approached this situation. We as a shelter rely heavily on members of the community to assist us in our goals. Had I been you, unable to assist a wild dog, but desperate to help, I would not have resorted to publically condemning animal welfare organizations that are trying desperately to help as many animals as we can. Rather, I would have called said organizations repeatedly and annoyed them until an adequate solution to this situation was found. We would love to help every animal, but we are forced to prioritize.

Armed with more information, I am now prepared to act to the benefit of this animal. Please call me with directions today and I will set a trap and try to capture this poor dog. In the future, I hope that Animal Friends can respond to every call. In the mean time, please bear with us as we do everything we can to save one animal at a time.

    Sincerely,

    John Peaveler
    Rescue Coordinator
    Animal Friends League of Kuwait

    John Peaveler,

Please note that I am FORWARDING a message that was posted on 248am.com that was not written by me.
I found it necessary to alert you to the post that was made.

I suggest you visit 248am.com and reply directly to this post and not attack the messanger!!!

I am an active animal rescuer who actually donates money to both your organization and PAWs through charity events - the next one I am attending is the May 10th breakfast!

Hi John, firstly I want to thank you for posting your long comment but I would like to make something clear.

We (as in me and Nat) have nothing against AFL. In fact we strongly believe in AFL and we’ve even had contact with your wife and we know how much of an animal lover she is. We’ve had a lot more positive experience with AFL then we have had with PAWs and if you read some of the comments above you will notice that most of the criticism by the readers has been towards PAWs not AFL.

Now all that Nat did was post about her experience with this dog. She spoke to someone at AFL over the phone, explained to them the situation and what is posted here is just her experience. She didn’t condemn you and if you reread what she wrote you would see her post wasn’t an attack to AFL.

Nat’s post was about an injured dog which she is feeling very sorry for and helpless about the situation and she was asking people for advice on what she could do to rescue it.

So I would just like to make it clear one more time that we fully support AFL.

  30. 30. Nat | April 10th, 2008 at 1:15 pm

Hello John i just emailed you the direction! Looking forward for you call..
    thanks…

  31. 31. Nicole | April 10th, 2008 at 1:38 pm

Mh,…., now, what happened to the dog? Could someone help him? :S

I for one wish one could find some feedback on what happens to the animals one finds and either AFL or PAWS takes care of afterwards.
Like some quick snaps and a few words on their web pages.

  32. 32. John Peaveler | April 10th, 2008 at 2:07 pm

I would like to thank everyone for their interest in this situation.

At this point, I have no idea who sent or wrote the email we received this morning.

However, the purpose of my post was not to express anger toward anyone. I merely wished to describe the reality of the situation for the benefit of everyone. No one at animal friends is harboring any grief towards anyone here. We are too busy!

More importantly, I want to get out and help this animal.

Thank-you for advocating on our behalf.

    Regards,
    John Peaveler

    is animalfriendskuwait.org a non-profit organization?

  34. 34. Bo-Bader | April 10th, 2008 at 5:08 pm

someone should put it out of its misery

  35. 35. Anon | April 10th, 2008 at 6:46 pm

Animal friends is a non-profit org.
Unfortunetly animal rescue orgs in Kuwait cannot take critism nor can they accept the fact that sometimes they just cannot help, due to whatever reasons they splurt out.
Animal rescue is about taking in strays and caring for them, no matter what their condition, clearly we have definitions and categories here which do not consitute an ‘official’ animal rescue organization (’constraints’ as they put it!)
Both Paws and AF have ‘clicks’ unfortunate but true - a thing that is so magnified in Kuwait that even Expats adopt it.
Improvements are needed and community penetration through education and awareness should be emphasized upon.
Yes I am critisizing because I am entitled to my opinion and do not really care about facts.
Do your homework before hand and estimate magnitude are the stratgies these org’s should have adopted before starting up.

  36. 36. Cymraeg | April 10th, 2008 at 7:36 pm

It sounds like we should be volunteering to these organisations with our time and money, by the sound of it they are busy people who need help from us, other busy people.

Sounds like we feel it is only our duty to pick up a phone then wash our hands, leaving a charity staffed by volunteers to then do the hard part - take immediate action when we neither support these groups with our time or our money. We are probably more tolerant of profit-making companies like Alghanim or NBK when we sit on hold on the phone, and it seems we are less critical of them too.

I wonder how many of you guys think that Oxfam is crap for example, because they don’t feed some of the poor kids that Unicef feed?

To bring back some balance instead of just griping, could we see some links to AFL or PAWS like their websites? Perhaps some of this advertising space on 248am that just says “Taken” could be used as this site’s owner’s contribution, rather than just being a forum for forgetting all the animals that these guys DO rescue when 1 isn’t miraculously picked up by these invisible angels we expect to come to our help?

    Just a thought.

  37. 37. John Peaveler | April 10th, 2008 at 10:01 pm

Yes, Animal Friends is a non-profit under the Kuwait Environment Protection Society.

Will you do a follow-up, Nat? Stinni rescued a dog she found tied and starving - in front of a SCHOOL? The rope had grown into the dog’s neck. She took the dog to the vet, and then to the shelter, and the dog is evidently recovering. Let’s hope your little friend has a similar positive outcome.

Volunteer organizations do the best they can to do what little they can to make the world a better place. They don’t need criticism - they need support, encouragement, and serious financial assistance.

I saw a limping dog in industrial Shuwaikh or Rai a couple of days ago. I’m not quite sure where exactly.. He was brown and kind of big. I felt sorry for him but I couldn’t really do anything. Is that the dog you were referring to?

  42. 42. Nour | June 21st, 2008 at 10:10 am

Kuwaitis are so nonchalant about animal care. They’re like toys… not living things. You buy them, get bored, have the khadama/9ebee/driver take care of it at the chalet, then one day they magically “run away.” Uhuh. I think the obvious scenario is your underpaid help isn’t dealing with your pet’s shit, too… literally.

I just got my fantastic little girl in April, and she’s already an integral part of the family. I couldn’t imagine life without her. And it helps that she’s the cutest dog I’ve EVER seen. She’s also adopted from the SPCA (it’s like PAWs… an animal shelter).
